>>5750092Her flesh was chill, each breath billowing mist as the specter of death rode on their heels. She clutched a flower of stone, her eyes locked upon the steel leviathan which had nearly sealed their fates as it began a slow descent into the shallows, its guns blissfully silent. Her heart grew numb. If there were more of their bodies left than bone fragments of Zufalligdorf and her crew she had seen no sign of them as they streamed through the trees towards salvation.
A pang of hunger suddenly struck her, but not from within. The False Bloom she clutched in her palm shuddered. Somewhere out there powers beyond the station of mortal men had acted and even from so far away she felt as if a furrow had been left in her soul. The primal fear of animals rose upon her as the tides lapped upon the shore and she selfishly wondered if, for a second time since the war began, she would be cursed to survive as her fellows fell besides her one by one until only she remained.
The mist began to lift, and with it the silence which allowed these thoughts to plague her mind departed. Behind her was the bulk of what remained of the Hageldorf Battalion. In front and besides her were the last hurdle between themselves and survival. Self pitying thoughts were cast aside as she began to shout orders, to escape the closing jaws of the mouth of hell.
