You had never sprinted as hard as you have now, Elizabeth only trailing behind you slightly. The Ghouls were trailing, but slowly gaining pace, they didn't seem to handle corners to well. You swear to yourself mentally as you hook a hard corner as the horde of ghouls crash into each other, over 20 of them from the force barreling into a dilapidated house breaking a load bearing support crashing the roof down on them. Didn't seem to really do anything as they soon after burst from the wreckage tossing the wood off hurtling after the rest of the group.
At the head of this mass of necrosis and death were several of those pack leaders, they were handling the turns and everything much better, and were over all just faster than the rest.
This patter repeats a few more times, the air you breath feels like it's cutting at your throat, but you both keep pushing. It was only one block away. You speak, "Alright last stretch, here goes nothing." you regret it as it messed with your breathing which was already at the breaking point. Elizabeth only grunts in affirmation, looking back once and trying with all her might to run faster, struggling to keep her current pace.
You pass the mine, you flick the first switch on the detonators which triggers the noise makers and opens up the meat boxes.
Some of the ghouls respond to it causing a catastrophic pile up near the mine as ghoul upon ghoul trips and flails over the other as the first ones get buried under the pile.
There was still a small group behind you, but you had at least 50 yards on them even if they were gaining. You feel something in your leg twinges and then begins to cramp up, you grit your teeth and keep pushing through the pain, you had to or you would die.
You hit the second switch on the detonators, nothing happened, your eye twitches and your breathing somehow becomes even more erratic and then you hit the second switch, if you were right about your pace you had passed the 400 yard mark just a few seconds ago.
And along with the press of the second button there is a boom, and then you go deaf and get knocked off balance tripping and tumbling forwards rolling and flipping on the ground like a ragdoll, fuck this hurt.
Elizabeth wasn't in any better of a situation, actually gaining on you by being somewhat lighter, but not by much.
Eventually your momentum stops and you manage to hoist your bruised body up to see the mushroom cloud and the eviserated remains of almost all the ghouls that were chasing you. As well as the destruction of several blocks of Santa Rosa.
The Red Fog intensifies greatly around the mushroom cloud glowing a crimson color as the aerosolized FEV consumes the Radiation from the explosion.
