The Orphanage of the Blue case is the biggest case you’ve been involved with in both your police and private detective jobs, and you’re not proud of that fact. It involved child-trafficking, child abuse, cult behavior, corruption, murder, everything a sick mind can imagine. The brain of the operation was a woman named Ophelia Bruun, an ex-government official and founder of this establishment and cult. Their mission was to revive an old forgotten deity to cast their revenge onto those who purged them. Pure unaltered madness.
Thanks to her connections, Ophelia’s orphanage got approved as one of the few official private adoption centers in the entire nation. She was also able to go around the country taking special children from different orphanages as she saw fit, most of them didn’t care since they are all Children of the Future. What made these kids special is the supposed ability to contact the spirits – all overseen by a teacher named Hamdaan Hubbard. A man with the supposed ability to see the kids’ potential. The children who were not showing enough progress were either sold overseas for adoption, enslaved or just plain murdered.
It all happened in your district at the time, in the peaceful town of Xumenlo, all under your noses. You and your former partner Yareli were the only ones who got a sniff about the operation, eventually, you two managed to dismantle the whole operation. Took years. Yareli grew too attached to the case as she befriended some of the orphans to get information. Once it was all over, those same kids were either found dead or in a state the kids were never going to be able to fully recover from. She was left traumatized upon witnessing those harrowing events, she sneaked in by herself, too worried about the kids’ wellbeing and paid the price, she saw it all… and you weren’t there for her.
The case was irrefutable, despite the government’s insistence on burying it deep into the ground, the news spread like fire overseas thanks to Lieutenant Vanessa’s connections as a police bodyguard, who risked it all to get justice for the people she felt failed to. Vanessa was in charge of the local police station, and always backed you up during the entire investigation. After the events, it came clear that Yareli would never return as a policewoman, the damage to her psyche was beyond repair. Because of that, you gave her all credit for the case, so she could retire early with a good pension for heroism. It worked out, but…
During the investigation, Vanessa van Zullekom was revealed to be one of the people who helped conceal Ophelia’s operation. Vanessa was taken into court, and promptly sentenced to death.
