>>5644040Even through the hole ridden husks her lads had made of the CSU-IIIs, it was hard for Freya to miss it when the platoon just beyond them was taken out. She hadn't even noticed that she was keeping an eye on Sglaza, but to her own surprise she'd already given the order to advance towards her tank once the mercenaries went to parley.
Outside her car, she looked down at the body with her hat held over her chest. Yet the lieutenant's face didn't hold the usual somber expression that came when a fellow veteran finally met their violent end, her brows her furrowed and her frown was deep. She'd learned to empathize with the enemy back in Sosaldt, to see the people past the uniform, but this was the first time she'd ever seen herself in another's skin.
[i:lit]It could be me lying in the grass next, couldn't it,[/i:lit] she thought. [i:lit]Leaving my little ones all on their own.[/i:lit]
Freya crouched down to shift through the dog tags around her neck, looking for Astrida's own. She may have wanted to be left here among the wreckage of warfare, but to Freya that sentiment was always just an excuse for mercenaries to accept the risk of their path. [i:lit]Doesn't matter what you want now, does it? You're already off, so suck it up.[/i:lit]
She picked Astrida up and carried her to her armored car, setting her somewhere comfortable for the ride. Whatever tokens may have fallen off her, Freya wasn't interested. It wasn't her that did the Evil Eye in, and at heart she was glad for it.
"Let's get you somewhere your boy can visit. Somewhere pretty."
