His tone and his choice of words makes it clear that he is not fond of this decision. If he had his way, you have no doubt that someone of an inferior rank would be speaking to you on his behalf and assigning you to a remote space station as a gil or glinn. But here he is, giving you authority over a Galor-class battlecruiser and its four hundred strong crew.
“I understand, legate. Thank you for giving me this opportunity; I will not disappoint you, nor the Union.”
“I would hope not, Gul Tekan. Now, let us speak of the glinns that shall support you. I am not so unkind that I would thrust you into a battlecruiser with officers who you lack synergy with, so I had an aide of mine put together a list of promising candidates for the positions of first, second and third officer.”
“Let us begin with the first officer,” the legate says as he taps at his personal access display device. Once he has brought up the appropriate files, Karzek pushes the PADD over to you so that you may view the candidates. “As your second-in-command, they will be responsible for the implementation of your orders and for challenging errors in your judgement. They shall also being responsible for directing personnel and managing operations – to put it simply, they will be responsible for maintaining efficiency on board the Onager.”
You were already aware of the responsibilities of a first officer, but you decide against voicing any complaint. Instead, you should decide which of these four candidates should serve as your second-in-command.
Tedran Garvet is an orphan, like yourself. Out of all of the candidates, he is easily the highest performer in almost every field. He has been identified as something of a star pupil, not unlike you. In fact, the two of you are so alike that he seems almost like a kindred spirit, though perhaps that isn't what you're looking for in a first officer.
Agorlak Renn is a name that you're familiar with. He's a fellow cadet at Akleen Military Academy, though he was born and raised on the frontier. Despite his colonial background and his middling test results, his gregarious nature and optimistic outlook has earned him the favour of the instructors and other cadets.
Aliana Erkat is one of the few women found in the Cardassian Guard. Women are better suited to matters of logic and science, while men tend to be more charismatic and physically able. Despite this, she seems to be a high scorer in naval simulations and perhaps the analytical eye of a woman could come in useful.
Eltar Lorat is another colonial bumpkin and according to his file, he's a bit of a loner. He has struggled in team-building exercises and tests of leadership, yet he has exhibited remarkable problem solving abilities. He doesn't beat simulations so much as break them. Perhaps you need a free thinker by your side, rather than a sycophant.
