Welcome young scholar to the world of magic. No matter where your road leads from here I can only hope you find success and knowledge at every turn. The path of the magician is perilous indeed. This first chapter serves two purposes, firstly as an introduction to the four schools of magic and secondly as a guide to the meditations that can unlock the earliest forms of magical power.
There exists four schools of magic. Divine Words (Air), Ley Flows (Water), Rune Circles (Earth) and Smoke Weaving (Fire). Each, as noted in parens, is associated with a particular element. Divine words are the flashy spoken words of magic, most often wielded by the battle mage and daring adventurer. Ley Flows are commonly seen as the magical potions of magic, creating powerful elixirs. Rune Circles are the bulwarks and defenses of magic, creating stable long lasting magic. And Smoke Weaving is the source of the often famous magic wands and dangerous spirits found in many magic stories.
Spells within the four schools of magic are sorted by what this text will refer to as 'Tiers' but are often referred to as levels, ranks, degrees or circles. Regardless of how these tiers are referred to it is important to note that each tier is approximately five times as powerful as the previous tier, and requires five times as much magical power. Increasing ones internal reserve of magical power to higher tiers is a critical task on the road to arcane mastery. The remainder of this chapter is a series of meditations and mental exercises intended to unlock the first tiers of your magical power.
