As soon as Adolph had moved to the back of the cart, Wilhelm suddenly shook the reins and cried, "Go, Asphodel!" and drove the horse toward the swampy ground.
"A trick!" Adolph shouted.
Asphodel gave a whinny as his hooves began to sink into the mud.
"Don't let them get away!" shouted Ludolph.
"Go, Asphodel!" Wilhelm cried again.
Wilhelm saw the cart wheels begin to slow, and he feared that he would fail in his quest, but the horse had been chosen for this quest just as carefully as he himself had been. With a mighty surge of effort, the beast dragged them out of the mud and back up onto the road. Asphodel's hooves beat faster and faster as the cart gained speed.
