“Then why have you brought out your forces? Are you on a war of conquest against our fellow Countrymen or are you defending yourself against the horrors that lie beyond?” Lucian asked the man as he nodded to the gathered forces.
“We are fighting a war of defense. The Count Herle de Rivel has declared war against me in this time of crisis.” Declared the Knight as he gave a grin, “The fool had made his intentions known to me two months ago and we have been waging war in this countryside for long enough. I do not put it past the Count that he led such an operation, his callousness knows no bounds.”
“Then you think this Count Herle did it? For another Knight to commit themselves to such a war would be quite the accusation.”
“Aye, but I have been winning.” Laughed the Count as he gave a grin, “I have him on the ropes so perhaps he is trying to burn the ground that he treads. Try to starve me out.”
“Then he burns his future lands.” Lucian pointed out.
“Aye, but they are not his lands if he loses.” The Count said, “It seems that we are after the same target oh Lucian. Perhaps you wish to join me on this fight and together we can bring this fool to justice! If the Lady has her favor upon you, you will ascend to a Knight of the Realm for your accomplishments in the coming battle.”
“Against my own kin?” Lucian felt himself almost disheartened as he heard such a suggestion.
“I am defending my lands, there is honor in that.” The Knight said as he gave a smile.
The Count was right, it was a chance to become higher. Yet Lucian knew that he could not accept the words of this man at face value. He was at war after all and there was really no risk of further retaliation when you were already in a war with someone.
It would be like Lucian degrading Ducal Prince Gillot. There was nothing worse than an active Feud.
