“I… I have to think more on, it, ma’am.”
She leaned on an elbow, her palm cupped her chin while her fingers ran over her lips, trying to figure you out. Her lids, sagged with years of stress, wrinkled while she thought of a response.
“I’m sure. You’ll need time to process. Is that all?”
Raquel had shut the door, gone as quick as she came. The clock ticked, an uncomfortable silence. She was about to let you leave, when you spoke up.
“Ma’am, who was that woman you were speaking with?”
Oberst Hanna looked through you, then focused her eyes. A slight expression, so small you would’ve missed it if you weren’t looking back at her.
“Your section commander, Elsa Becker. She doesn’t have the most… modern, of views. Do what you can to not make her think a man doesn’t belong up there, and you’ll do fine. That’ll be all, Eugen.”
You left her office, and made your way to the maintenance bays. An Electric Lightning was being worked on. It was magnificent, you thought. All was quiet, save for the grunting of a single mechanic, struggling and cursing while legs moved for comfort.
“I swear to fucking God, Fredrick Page, wherever you are- Hey, Manfred!”
In his rage, he had popped out of the aircraft to get a breath of fresh air, seeing you. You waved back meekly, your attention stolen by the aircraft in front of you. He slipped down off the Lightning, and bounded over to you.
“They told me you were coming! When I heard there’d be another guy around here, I said, ‘I have to be his crew chief!’ I’m Niccolo, it’s so good to meet you! You’re like a breath of fresh air, honest! Oh, that’s right, here!”
His coveralls were unzipped down to his waist, and tied around so they wouldn’t drop. An oil-stained undershirt revealed thick shoulders and biceps, though stout he was. Only shorter than you by a few inches, he seemed to revel in the excitement of you being there. He shoved a catalog in your hands, practically throwing it.
“Give that a look! It’s all the latest, plus some stuff you’ve already seen. I hear you’re going on an exercise tomorrow, so look it over and let me know what you want! They don’t tell me how much you make, but it’s enough to afford all kinds of stuff, from what I’ve seen with the others. You can sell, or hold onto that bucket of bolts you came in on in case you need a loaner, but if you dump all your money into a nice, newer jet, and you go down, you’ll be starting with that little trainer there on the first page.”
Your options opened once more. Displayed in the catalog were your options. Base models with other variants available would be listed, with their additional costs if you decided to upgrade the airframe. You have the option to sell your aircraft in order to get more points to buy another aircraft.
