A laugh that's more comparable to an engine sputtering to life comes out of Wendy. "Then why bother then? I only have to do it at work because I am OBLIGATED to. No one would've stopped you down here."

"Do you not understand this IS my job?" Your eye twitches for the briefest of moments. "This might seem like a fun violent diversion for you but this is the only way I pay the god damn bills."

Wendy blinks in apparent confusion. Did she seriously not realize you were a Cleaner? Or forget, even? Once the information sinks, another bitter laugh comes out of her. "That's sad." <"...and relatable. I had to start somewhere too a couple years ago.">

Huh. She was a Cleaner too before becoming a corporate rep. Interesting, perhaps you can play with that. "Maybe you worked alone as a Cleaner so you could get away with acting like this but me? I have the responsibility of SIX PEOPLE'S LIVES in my hand when I told them to come here. INCLUDING YOU." You jab a finger into her chest. "If I were to succumb to my urges on a mission, would my allies even be able to trust me as a leader?"

"I-" You cut off Wendy.

"You're a corporate rep, you have to understand how important it is for your underlings to trust you as a leader."

This seems to hit Wendy pretty hard if her tense expression is anything to say. Her yellow eyes sparkle and shimmer with an almost seething hatred in them. Yet in that hatred, you see something that reminds you all too much of yourself. Envy. Longing. A desire for something more than her current position and you KNOW it isn't money or fame.

It takes a while for Wendy to break the silence. "Everything I do is just a mask to make them happy. To make sure they don't quit their jobs." Her face immediately to spout a genial, corporate-friendly smile. Her voice rises up several octaves until she's almost as high pitched as Casey. "Wow, you're doing SUCH a good job! Your mining exports from the new mining town has raised 80%!"

The smile immediately disappears and her voice drops back to its slightly raspy tone. "I understand the merits of keeping up a strong face for your employees. But don't they see through it?"

"Does it matter if they do?"

[PERSON OF INTEREST] The thing that doesn't make sense is that he was apparently here two months ago. Yet the levels were already that lethal? Yet Valentina was gone for a week and a half, as confirmed by our Handler. Yet our groups are only coming here now? That doesn't make any sense.

[PERSON OF INTEREST] Fuck, is everyone here brain damaged by the fumes from the mines? Are we going to get any valuable information out of anyone here? Is this mission already a bust if SHE'S been down there for god knows how long.
[SEEKER OF THE CITY] Not necessarily. They only said there was no COMMUNICATIONS for a week and a half and this was the last place they saw her at. If the mines were already closed, she could've spent time trying to negotiate a way in-

"Nicole?" Benjamin shakes you by the shoulder. You're immediately snapped out of your dazed internal monologue. "You, uh, you were mumbling to yourself. What's on your mind?"

"Timeline shit. Doesn't make sense. Corpos not being here until WE arrived, the mines being closed right around the time she disappeared..."

"If they felt like it was important enough to come down here, maybe they tried sending others down here but got stonewalled? The miners were REALLY ornery about them being here." Benjamin half heartedly shrugs.
"Week and a half ago?" Casey hums. "Closed for two weeks. Could be lie. Could be closed when she went down there."

[PERSON OF INTEREST] Wait. Could she be stuck there because they're keeping her there for whatever reason? Maybe Devin was wrong about when it closed, he wasn't in the right state of mind.

Fuck, something about this is really starting to skeeze you out. You need more information but the four implications of what happened here are NOT good. A murder, a suicide, a dumbass rich girl accidentally brain melting herself, maybe even a kidnapping.

Something clicks in your head though. Huh, you still have that old earpiece and so does Benjamin. You pull it out of your INVENTORY. Benjamin quickly does the same. Might as well do a quick check in on Max and Alexis-

"Listen." Max's voice whispers over the earpiece. "Mayor's been acting weird. Won't give a straight answer."
