But saying that you believed something and actually believing it were two completely different things. Ben, at the very least, wanted you to live a life where killing was entirely unnecessary, which you appreciated. The Fist of Khonshu himself even said that he no longer thought that it was right to kill your enemies indiscriminately, and he was meant to be the embodiment of Khonshu's will and wrath.
And seeing as how he hadn't been stripped of his title, Khonshu must not mind a level of independent thinking when on the job. At least, that was the way you justified your recent behavior towards your god.
But an unsettling feeling was beginning to creep into your bones. You knew that Khonshu was still with you, but you could no longer feel his reassuring grip on your shoulder. Was his influence somehow weaker here? And if so, was it the Headmaster's doing.
You spared a subtle glance for their mysterious leader.
The Headmaster must’ve been satisfied with your current level of compliance, because they immediately started heading towards a nearby door with a quick swish of their robes.
“There had better be a phone where we're going…”
“What're you in such a rush for?” Hulkette sneered.
You let out a deep sigh, and glanced down at the muscle-brained girl. She was only a little taller than Pei.
“Family drama and monster politics…” you muttered, unable to decide which of the two would be more stressful.
Liberty and Hulkette glanced at one another, and then shrugged. They hadn't been ruffled by that last remark, so you had to assume that they've more or less gotten used to the idea of fighting weird monsters.
The two of them led you through several interconnected rooms leading to an elevator. Along the way, you spotted other young trainees that Cradle had either abducted or indoctrinated.
Not all of them were in costume, but you could tell from the way that they were being treated by Cradle's faculty that they were more or less recognized as “exceptional individuals”.
Their appearances varied, from skin tone, to skin texture, to costume color and design, to obvious differences in the anatomical structure of a regular human, each one of them stood out in some way.
You traded glances with more than a few of them. Which wasn't surprising, considering the flashy entrance you just made, and the fact that you were currently trailing blood through their halls.
You thought you saw some of them attempting to approach you, but Hulkette waved them off. It looked like the two were unwilling to allow you any distractions after being summoned by their boss. So, everyone else had to settle for murmuring amongst themselves and sizing you up from afar.
Almost all of these young vigilantes seemed to be around the same age as you, if not a little older. Why had they decided to stay on board with this crazy program? Didn't they have families to go back to, or mentors to train under?
