Eventually, after numerous bombings that exhaust the boosted strength of the mech, the rift seals! There’s still a glowing fracture in space, that remains highly radioactive, but it’s a thin line. In order to recreate it, the shard will have to spend the full effort on lair construction again, instead of just a single action for repairing a damaged lair.

Now that the threat is gone, they cave to international pressure and direct their war machine towards the aliens.

As its flesh sizzles, it sucks up vast quantities of radiation to power itself up, preparing to use it for either further evolution, or to boost its special abilities in the near future. As it absorbs fuel, it sees yet another shape above it, different from the one that hurt it.

The knowledge seekers airdrop packages and containers from high above, beyond the reach of the deadly mushroom cloud at ground zero. They can’t approach to check on it, so all they can do is dump shipments of radioactive material and raw biomass into the crater, so that the elephant can consume them and fix at least a bit of the damage it received. The alliance it has created with them is paying off.

It then siphons up the energy torn open by the rift, seeking to harvest it and charge up for later.
