>>5571934Kannenpflanze watched the town through the sights of a machine gun that had been recently mounted next to the commander's hatch. Thanks to the darkness and the gas mask, the buildings were reduced to an approaching collection of indistinct dark shapes. Still, Leopold was quite sure that the outskirts, wreathed in lavender smoke of Lachrymator gas, were bereft of any movement. He let go of the machine gun and stood in the turret for a better look when the preparatory barrage crashed down further into the settlement. If any bat-ears had been caught in the bombardment, they weren't so considerate as to let him know that. Kannenpflanze raised his arm and called the platoon to a halt so that he could better assess the situation. More armor was coming up behind him on the left, while a column of trucks had halted not far from his platoon, dismounts already spilling out of the vehicles. Contact reports came from both right and left flanks, yet the center—and the crucial road—remained eerily calm. Leopold looked around once more and, finding a brief break in the shelling, thumbed his headset. "Much too quiet, isn't it, Stoetten?"
"That it is, Lieutenant." Though away from his homeland for almost three decades now, the older senior NCO had failed to completely excise the East Valsten accent from his speech. "They obviously have something nasty waiting for us further up ahead. Couldn't say how much further, though."
"Right. And do you reckon those strange little vehicles reported on our left are a part of that?"
"It'd be right unsporting for them to do something so devious, wouldn't it, Lieutenant?"
"Hah. Right. Honor is a human abstraction, so I don't expect these foul-blooded beasts to have an inkling of it. The Heavy Platoon of the Hageldorf Battalion's Armored Company will draw first blood against the subhuman here and drive them from the field and back into their bogland!"
"Heavy Platoon? Who's that, Lieutenant?" Lindner, the commander of the third tank, cut in.
"Us, you imbecile! Who else? Argh, stow the chatter and fall in on me, platoon." Gunfire sounded from behind and streams of tracers arced towards the woods. From the west, a few pops of short-barreled cannons followed. Kannenpflanze switched over to the tank intercom. "Jahnke, prepare an illumination shell. We're moving in, Krausenfeldt. Give it a second to deploy and take us in nice and careful."

>>5571871Right, that makes sense. So the lack of smoke shells is more of a gameplay consideration, then?
