You hop into the back of the unmarked van down the street before they veer away. As you enter, you see the other blondes- Brun's friends and companions. They are coated in blood- wiping away the red stains and ocular fluid from their knives.
It's true, you are a soldier. You were desensitized to violence and trained to kill. But you never, ever though you'd see something like this. It was almost thoughtlessly easy to order the attack- all you did was say which direction he was heading from the city square and the men did the rest, but now you're feeling a little queezy. You've shot at people before, yeah, but they are always little black dots on a far away hillside. Just the thought of pushing a knife into someone's face- or eyesocket- even worse, just makes you feel a little uncomfortable. The blondes are in high spirits, as for yourself, you are reminded of the fact you were probably only about a five minute run from the embassy.
Later, once you are back at the encampment, you go to your room to find your bird box empty. Looks like he flew away.
”Hey, Akule. Thanks for your help today.”
”Oh? Yeah, thanks. I didn't do much though.”
”Nonsense! You performed cool under pressure and you didn't stand out either. You'd make a good spy.”
”Uhh... Thanks?”
”Why so glum?”
”I don't know, just seems pretty... harsh.”
”For a rapist?”
”No no, just... I wish it just never happened. You know?”
”Well, so do I, but you can't control what can or can't happen. Punishments like this ensure they don't happen again.”
”Making him blind would turn the Redmane into a cripple and dependent on the state for the rest of his life- as much as he was already. Wouldn't it be better just to have killed him?”
”Harsh punishments can give people a chance to learn from their mistakes, a dead man learns nothing. Tell me, would you rather be blind or dead?”
”Dead, probably.”
Brun frowns, but says nothing.
