Don't make the character obviously gay! Don't even mention the gay! This literally would turn off the unreceptive audience! Make the character seemingly ordinary and relatable, but through some ordeal / circumstances they begin to question things... (Note that how some of the authors I mentioned eg lesbian Virginia Woolf, Evelyn Waugh Brideshead Revisited they never really even mention the taboo of the gay lol, even though it is central to all their work)
