Rather than resort to violence, the leaders of our tribe wish to earn the favour of these tree-dwellers and bring them into the fold of the Protavic. Copper tools are sent to the colonies, along with foreign luxuries that our trading expeditions have brought back – seashells and coral, colourful furs, that sort of thing. The Scagravic are even offered plenty of food in exchange for their fealty, enough to alleviate their existence of subsistence.
Each of these seven settlements accepts the offering and the incorporation of the colonies is celebrated with a great feast. However, it quickly becomes clear that the Scagravic have precious little to offer our tribe. They do not bring any technological innovation with them – they climb up the blackwoods with awls and they carve out their homes with chisels, both of which are made from stone. They produce plenty of rope as well, for safer passage up and down the great trees that they call home, but it's rare for a month to go by without a tree-dweller falling to their death. It seems as though the secret to their arboreal lifestyle simply lies in a lifetime of practice.
Worse still, the Scagravic do not seem to contribute anything of value to the Protavic. They seem content to live their self-sufficient lives of isolation, separate from the rest of the tribe. For the most part, they are still hunter-gatherers – some even seem to consider an agrarian or pastoral lifestyle as being beneath them, as though their primitive way of life is superior. Many of the beast-bringers are displeased with the decision to buy the loyalty of these tree-dwellers – as far as they're concerned, the Scagravic are a perfect example of the savagery of lesser tribes.
The bad news doesn't stop there. Though the Scagravic heartland was never well-connected to its colonies, it did send out scouts across the river every year or so to communicate with these offshoots. Now that these messengers have brought home news of how the colonies have defected, the main body of the tree-dwelling tribe is outraged – not just with these outposts, but with our tribe. Traders are no longer allowed through their territory and every now and then, they even send raiding parties across the river to assail the Protavic. A constant Vuvovic presence is required on our tribe's eastern border in order to deter such attacks.
A generation passes.
