>>5839644Really weird thought I had: recently I have been playing Medieval 2 Total War, full install of all the expansions, this game is super fun, I am conquering France yay.
To get in the mood for this, I decided to rewatch Kingdom of Heaven, with gormless Orlando Bloom acting and Eva Green doing some eye smouldering. I first watched this film back when it first came out and was disappointed with it, this time I watched the extended version / Ridley Scott Director's Cut.
Near the end of the film after Orlando Bloom surrenders Jerusalem, and Saladin marches in, he looks up at a random mosque.
It was at that point I discovered that Quake 1 apparently stole their logo from Islam
After researching this for a bit, it seems whilst the crescent symbol was extant during that era, it was more of an Ottoman 19th Century thing? Just going from wikipedia, if Saladin was from the Zengid dynasty / Seljuk Empire (?) his historical flag / symbol might actually have been literally a warhammer 40k double headed eagle...?
Anyway, this just made me realise how so much of how Hollywood shapes portrayals of history can really confuse and bewilder people when it comes to the iconography and depiction of various events
