Callisto moved a blue eye to point in your direction.

“It’s okay. We can catch up once I’m done here. I can’t promise that it’ll be a short game, though. Storm’s pretty good at it.” Callisto admitted.

“Do not downplay your own abilities, Callisto. You are an excellent strategist in your own right.”

“Thank you.” she said, before turning to direct a smug grin at you. “See? I can take compliments.”

“Can I stay and watch?” Joy asked, glancing between Callisto and Gwen.

“Of course. You seem like a far better conversationalist than my opponent.” Storm said.

Joy beamed at her.

“So much for mutant solidarity.” Callisto grumbled.

“I should probably get going too.” Gwen put in. “I’ve got other assignments today, and I’ve already spent too much time here.”

“And I’ve gotta get back and explain what’s been going on here. I’ll try and stop the police from storming in here, but I can’t hold them back forever. You’d do well to open this park to the public as soon as possible.”

“Which reminds me,” you began, pointing to Callisto. “You should link up with Glass later. We’re putting together some plans, and we’d love to have your input.”

“The Huntsman’s got another hare-brained scheme. Why am I not surprised?” Callisto said, rolling her eye. “And as for you two, stop worrying so much. Glass is the one taking care of Joy now. And he’s about the nicest person I’ve ever met. He won’t let anything happen to her.”

Almost as one, the Stacys released a sigh of relief that you hadn’t been aware they’d been holding.

“We’ll have to catch him another time, then.” George said.

Then, the Stacys said their goodbyes, and you left the others to their chess game. All in all, you thought that went pretty well. Although, you were curious about what Callisto had been about to say back there. If she was planning to ease back on her duties as an overseer for The Alley, then what was going to keep her so busy?

Callisto scoffed.

“Yeah, she’s decided that she’s too good to slum it down here with us. Rallied a decent chunk of other, younger Morlocks and went with Nature Girl to ‘build a home in the city’. From what I’ve heard, they settled down in Central Park. It’s only a matter of time before someone tries to push them out and they come running back.”

“How exactly are you keeping tabs on them?”

“Joyce is my man on the inside. She goes back and forth, and reports back to me when she gets a chance. She’s honestly the best person to keep an eye on our resident Shark Girl while she tries to ‘find herself’.”

From your perch, you stared down at the street below and kicked your feet idly. You could’ve gone down to visit Callisto personally, but you were in desperate need of fresh air, and the Alley wasn’t exactly the best place to get it.

“In the meantime,”

Callisto continued.

“I’ve gotta deal with the thick roots that Donnie left when he outgrew his pot. Some of them are growing into the pipes and pathways down here, and I think there’s gonna be some people coming down to investigate. There’s a non-zero chance that they might stumble upon our humble abode.”

“You think they’re gonna try and flush you out?”

You managed to drag a dry chuckle out of Callisto with that one.

“I don’t know if they could, but I still don’t like all the attention we’ve been getting. Nothing good ever happens when a mutant is on the news.”

What will you say?

>”What do you want to do about those roots? We can’t exactly ask Donnie to move, and I don’t think Nature Girl would take kindly to us cutting his roots. Plus, I don’t want to hurt him.”

“Hey, it’s me. You’re getting prank calls down there?”

You heard Callisto chuckle from the other end of the phone, followed by a creaking sound that you thought was her leaning a shoulder against the wall of the booth.

“Every now and again, yeah. It’s mostly kids, so they’re easy enough to scare off. I guess it’s entertaining in its own way. Sometimes I just get static, and other times the phone intercepts radio signals. A lot of the other Morlocks are either too scared, superstitious, or lazy to answer the phone, so I’m usually the one that does it.”

“It helps that you’re one of the only ones that can hear it from anywhere in the sewers.”

You said, feeling a bit better now that you and Callisto had fallen into a somewhat familiar rhythm.

“By the way, you answered pretty quickly this time. Were you waiting by the phone for me to call?”

Callisto let out a snort.

“You wish. I just happened to be in the neighborhood. But since you’re here, you might as well tell me how the kids are doing. Did your little mission/vacation go well?”

You swallowed hard and took a deep breath before continuing.

“Listen—I’m getting serious here. First of all, everyone’s alive, but Iara got hurt pretty badly. Something messed with her mind. We had some experts try to mitigate most of the but, well…”

It was a struggle to get the words out, but you tried to be as concise as possible with your breakdown of events.

“She still has her memories, but they’re a bit foggy. And by her account, she doesn’t really feel like those memories belong to her.”

“What the fuck are you talking about, Huntsman? This isn’t funny.”

Callisto being upset was pretty much a given, but at the very least she wasn’t screaming at you.

“I wish I was joking. She’s right here with me if you want to-”

“Put her on the phone.”

Her tone brooked no quarter, and you weren’t going to argue. You offered the phone to Iara, and the shark girl cautiously accepted it.

“Hi. Callisto, right? The eyepatch lady. I’ve got a lot of memories with you in them. It’s nice to meet-”

Iara went quiet, and you could faintly hear Callisto’s voice from the receiver as she unleashed question upon question onto the person who had once been her close friend.

The next few minutes involved Iara trying, and failing, to explain her current situation in a satisfactory way. When she passed the phone to Glass, you heard him recounting the details of your encounter with the Brood. You were grateful that he left out all the other stuff involving the demons and aliens you fought. That would only complicate things at this juncture.

W spun an ultrathin layer of webbing along her hands and fingers, watching closely as the spider crawled around and between them. “Maybe. She was…interesting. Different. Nice like Abel, but not as…’patient’?”

She tilted her head to the side, and quietly repeated the word to herself a few times before nodding. “Yes. Patient.”

“She was probably just a little excited to meet you. You’re like a sister to her, you know.” you said.

W lowered her hand allowed the spider to crawl off of her hand. “Family...”

You nodded. “That’s right.”

W turned and stared directly into your eyes, her bland mask making it difficult to determine her mood or expression.

“Catching up is nice.” she said. “I’ll teach Gwen patience next time, like Abel.”

Now that was something that you desperately needed to see. But it would have to wait until after you spoke with Callisto.

“Would you like to meet another one of my friends today? I swear she’s not as talkative as Gwen.” you suggested, pulling out your phone.

W glanced down at your phone, and then back up at you. “More patient?”

Well, you wouldn’t exactly say that…

“Sort of?”

W hummed thoughtfully, before nodding and correcting her posture so that she faced you fully. You gratefully accepted her permission and dialed the number. It took several tries before anyone picked up, but Callisto’s voice came through loud and clear over the phone’s speaker.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Callie. I’ve got a huge favor to ask. There’s this friend of mine that needs a place to stay for a while, and I was hoping that you might be willing to meet up with her so that the two of you could get acquainted.”

“...Okay. Who exactly are you trying to pawn off on me?” she asked.

“She’s the, uh…genetic clone of one of my friends. She might have a bit of spider DNA too, honestly.”

For a good, long while, there was silence on the other end of the line. You imagined that the sentence was a lot to take for most normal folk, but you and Callisto didn’t exactly meet that qualification anymore.

“Right. Not a terribly uncommon case, I’m sure.” she replied, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “So is there any way I can get in contact with this person before the meeting, or am I gonna have to use you as a proxy?”

“She’s actually here with me right now. Say hi, W!”

“Hi.” W obediently complied.

Callisto waited for her to say more, but the rest never came.

“I don’t know, Huntsy. This one might be liable to talk my ear off if you brought her down here. You’ve got a real chatterbox on your hands.”

Some of the indignation drained from her face, and she gave you a slight smile. While you were here, you might as well try to wingman for your best bud. You haven’t been spending a whole lot of quality time with him lately, and he deserved a break too.

“You should be free to go on as many dates as you want. But, why look for a date when you’ve already got a good guy looking out for you?” you said, waiting for Vic to pick up on the hint, but you only got a confused look in return. “I’m sure Flint would love to take you out for a night on the town.”

Her eyes went wide for a moment, and her expression became thoughtful. “I don’t know. Wouldn’t it be kind of weird to date your brother’s best friend? I mean, I have known him for a while…”

For a brief moment, she didn’t seem all that opposed to the idea. But then, a shadow fell across her face as she made a sudden realization.

“Right. We probably haven’t known each other that long. Because of that stupid brainwashing thing.” she said, that spiteful edge returning to her voice. “I don’t know if he even likes me because Van told him to, or because I’m…well, me.”

Was Van’s influence so powerful that it’s causing Vic to doubt the validity of her relationships? You knew she always had issues with self esteem, but this…

“I decided to keep the memories, you know.”

The words came out without you even realizing. It just felt like something that needed to be said. She looked up in surprise, your words having taken precedence in her mind.

“So even if no one else remembers, they’ll still be real to us.” you said.

Vic’s eyes began to glisten slightly, and she let out a sniffle before crossing the room to wrap her arms around you in a warm hug. You returned it in kind, rubbing her back in what you hoped was a comforting gesture. This went on for about a minute before she released you, looking far more relieved and reassured than she had been a moment ago.

“Thanks, Ben. That means a lot.” she said, wiping the corners of her eyes with the back of her hand. “And about what you said…I’ll give it some thought.”

That would have to do. Vic didn’t look like she could handle anymore drama, so you tactfully dropped the subject and shifted the conversation to something more lighthearted.

Later that day, you traveled down to the Alley in order to get some more training in with Callisto. You had been fully prepared to get trounced by your grumpy tentacle monster of an instructor, but she surprised you with the new conditions she’d set for this training session.

“You want me to start using my webs?” you asked. “But, wasn’t the point of all this to teach me how to fight without them?”

You paused to consider her offer, and nodded when you decided that you found it favorable.

“There we go. It’s always a pleasure doing business with you.” you said, extending a hand towards her.

She let out a small sigh and released the tension in her shoulders before firmly gripping your hand and shaking it up and down.

“You’ll have the money before we drop you off. For now, you and the others should come down to the lower decks.” she advised. “None of you want to be up here when we start moving.”

Once the Lost Boys had finished screaming their heads off, you lead them all further down into the ship. Glass and Peter Pan were helping them get situated, which allowed you and Callisto to have a brief talk about the options you had for sewer renovations.

You would have to try and improve their quality of life without drawing too much attention or wasting money on pointless features. It was a bit more challenging than you thought. You had to wonder if it was truly worth it to try and cover up the true purpose behind the underground construction.

A little later, you were leisurely chatting with Anastasia about your trophies and the highlights of your hunt. She never did manage to get that mermaid flesh that she wanted. But hey, there’s always next time.

A few hours later, you were back in The Big Apple, breathing in that familiar polluted air that you’ve lived with for almost your entire life.

You said your goodbyes to the kids, wished them the best, and hoped that you left a decent impression on them. It was sort of hard to tell when Tinkerbell had been buzzing around your head the entire time. Apparently, she was pretty upset with you about that stunt you pulled on Pan. But even she couldn’t ruin your good mood.

Because according to Hill, the lab techs made a “breakthrough” in their research, and they were beginning to synthesize a miracle drug to help stabilize Gwen’s condition. If all went well, she should be able to leave her cell within the week!

As soon as she was approved, Doc Connors would be released as well. He could’ve left earlier, but he volunteered to stay in order to aid in the drug’s development. He was truly the nicest mark that you’ve ever robbed.

The only real downside here was the absence of one of your teammates. With Glass volunteering to escort the kids to Xavier’s and check the place out for himself, you would be short a Desperado for a little while. The guy didn’t even ask for his cut of the money. Callisto had to force a donation on him just to make sure he had enough for food.

When you questioned her about it, all she said was that Glass had spent more time out on the streets than any Morlock or mutant she knew.

Sometime during the middle of your flight, you remembered that you had your slouch hat, and slipped it onto your head. The slight, but sudden movement was enough to draw everyone’s attention, and you were quickly made aware of the fact that everyone was now staring at you.

A snort form Felicia is what broke the silence. “Spider?” she said, clearly struggling to keep a straight face. “What is that?”

“What, this? It’s my new hat. Keeps the sun out of my eyes.” you proclaimed.

“Is there a point in wearing one over your mask?” Prowler asked, speaking up for the first time all morning.

“To keep the sun out of my eyes!” you repeated, becoming slightly agitated and more than a little defensive.

“That is what the cowl is for.” Anastasia added. “Could you not have slipped that over your head instead?”

You gave her a betrayed look. “I thought you said you liked the look.” you said.

The corners of her lips curled into a slight smirk as she spoke. “That was before I saw the hat. Now…I’m not so sure.” she said, a bemused expression on her face.

“As much as you might consider it a fashion faux pas, I think it’s a very sensible accessory for him to wear.” Callisto put in. “If he hadn’t brought it, he might’ve been blinded by the sun’s glare reflecting off of Glass’ shiny, brittle ass.”

This earned her a shove from Glass, who chuckled right along with her. Even the S.H.I.E.L.D agents seemed to have joined in on the good natured laughter.

“No, you know what? Fuck you guys. I like this hat.” you declared. “And good luck dealing with that sunburn you’re gonna get, Cat.”

Felicia lazily waved you off and pulled a tube of sunblock out of her pack. “Aww, don’t be like that, Spider.” she cooed, batting her long eyelashes at you furiously. “I’m gonna need some help putting it on later, and I thought you’d want to be first in line.”

Everyone cast expectant glances over at you, and you suddenly found yourself put on the spot. Normally, you wouldn’t have minded in the slightest, and would return her flirtations without a second thought. But with Anastasia here, you couldn’t help but feel awkward about the whole thing.

Luckily, before the silence stretched on for too long, the pilot decided to have mercy on you, and announced that you’d be landing within the minute. You breathed an inaudible sigh of relief, and just barely managed to catch Black Cat winking at you out of the corner of your eye. You were definitely going to be poking her bare, red skin when she got sunburned later.

Cindy waved up at Callisto, and the Morlock leader gave her a lazy wave in return. You shot her a friendly wink, and her response was noticeably less friendly. You decided not to take it personally.

“Now, you met Cindy and Flint already, but with our full cadre, we are…” you trailed off, leaping onto a stack of nearby crates, and striking a heroic pose. “THE DESPERADOS!” you declared, projecting your voice throughout the tunnel.

You remained entirely still, and completely silent for a moment, letting your declaration hang in the air for dramatic effect. Out of the corner of your eye, you noticed your comrades silently conversing amongst one another, trying to figure out whether they should pose as well, and what type of pose they should take.

From the sounds of it, Prowler was against the idea, which was no big surprise. Felicia and Cindy thought it would’ve been fun, but were very put off by the fact that they haven't rehearsed anything beforehand. Flint was simply too confused to do anything substantial, and Glass was busy pretending that he didn’t know any of you.

You weren’t sure if this was a cold reception, or if you were now being treated like an eccentric idiot. Either way, that should’ve at least done something to break the ice a bit.

“That’s copyrighted, by the way.” you added, flipping off the stack of crates and landing gracefully on your feet.

“Thanks for the warning, boss.” Felicia said with no small measure of sarcasm. “If I knew we were going to be striking sexy poses, I would’ve worn better boots.”

“Right. Because that’s the problem.” Prowler grumbled, shaking a stray piece of garbage off of his boot.

“I can always take you with me next time I go shopping. Someone really oughta brighten up your wardrobe.” she teased, before eyeing up Flint. “You too, muscles. You’ve been wearing the same shirt everyday.”

Flint looked down at his favorite, green striped shirt and shrugged. “I was wearing it when I got turned, so I think I’m stuck with it for life.” he said.

Felicia just shook her head and gave him a pitying look. “Now that has got to be the saddest thing I’ve ever heard.”

Cindy seemed entertained by this whole exchange, but you also noticed a bit of sadness in her smile when she remembered that she couldn’t join in.

“Alright. I’ve had enough of this comedy act.” Callisto declared, sliding down a ladder and approaching you with a determined expression. “Glass told me about you and yours. Says that you’re practically harmless. Although, I’ve only seen one of you in action.” she said, glancing down at Cindy. “If you want this whole thing to work, then I need to know whenever you get new members on your crew. I have to approve of each and every single one before I can allow them safe passage.”

“Sounds reasonable.” you agreed.
