“Let’s focus on finding the girls before we do anything else. Think you can track them, Ana?”
She scoffed at you.
“What kind of question is that? Of course, I can.”
If Ana’s anything, she’s extremely confident in her abilities. And with Iara’s sense of smell and Prowler’s investigative prowess, you suspected that you’d be running into them in no time. You just hoped that you’d find them in one piece…
—---------
Slowly, you and the others proceeded through the facility, on the lookout for Gloria’s girls and any other signs of conflict that might arise. You didn’t hear any more gunshots, or see any signs of life. In fact, it was eerily silent. It would be easy to assume that you were the only ones present in the facility, but that was probably the point. Whatever, or whoever was down here, they’d want to lull you into a false sense of security. Which was why you were playing very close attention to your spider-sense. Your job was to warn everyone of any impending threats before they got too close. But so far, nothing was—
“Stop!”
Everyone paused and turned back to look at you. Your breaths were coming hard and fast, and it was a struggle to keep your voice down as the alarm bells blaring in your skull tried to communicate something that you could barely understand. So instead of trying to articulate this complicated feeling, you waved them over and gestured for them to hide. W was quickest to react, which made sense. Her spider-sense was more acute than yours.
“Get back.”
Instead of arguing, everyone backed away from the glass panels lining the walls and waited for whatever it was to pass. And that’s when the entire corridor was enveloped in darkness. A slow, creeping shadow as large as an apartment building blotted out what little natural light was able to penetrate these depths, leaving you with only the weak fluorescent lighting being generated by whatever still allowed this undersea base to function.
You couldn’t see too well, but you somehow knew that whatever it was that was passing over you was alive. And if your spider sense had anything to say about it, you felt that it was fair to assume that it wasn’t friendly.
No one spoke until the leviathan was out of sight, and even then, you could practically feel the tension radiating off of them.
“Did you see that thing when you swam down here?”
Prowler’s eyes were wide as he looked to Iara for answers. She shook her head frantically.
“I’ve never seen anything like that! It was fucking huge!”
“Is it safe to assume that the scientists that worked in this facility were experimenting on the native ocean life?”
Ana wasn’t exactly sweating bullets like Prowler was, but you couldn’t help but notice the hint of excitement that punctuated the fear she likely felt. She was actually thinking about what it would be like to go after that thing!
