>>5423586>>5423593Here is a render of an actual proposed VAWT project - those wind turbine blades rotate around the horizontal plane perpendicular to the vertical axis, which tilts with the wind. The benefit to the traditional wind turbine is the weight is all at the bottom (versus the traditional fan blade where the nacelle/turbine is hoisted to the very top). My understanding is that the torque efficiency of these experimental VAWTs is much further behind the optimised traditional fielded design - but those may not work as well at sea, and also are not as easily integrated with solar. There is also some fluid dynamics stuff which means VAWT can be stacked much closer together in a denser field than the traditional turbine, where air speed dissipates in the wake behind the turbine. I do have a feeling that if the team that proposed the R&D for this could not secure financing in a low volatility low interest rate environment of permissive free capital and ESG investment mania lol this project will probably find it a lot tougher in the months to come hehe.
