A soldier of the Dragon Guard is expected to familiarise themselves with the fighting styles of each of their foreign cohort counterparts. It is not anticipated by your officer superiors that you become an expert in the varied unique martial skills present in the Guard by any means, but a degree of basic understanding in how each cohort fights is demanded. More importantly, how those specialised units complement your own cohorts style of warfare and how you Cantonians support them in turn in the field.
What makes the Dragon Guard the true elite, as is oft touted by the various Marshalls watching you strain and perspire under their keen eye, is how the myriad warriors of the world integrate their own practices into an unstoppable fighting force the likes of which remains unmatched in all of creation.
This week the focus was individual unarmed combat, but over the coming months during Drill Rota your exposure and training in more and more martial skills typically unknown to a noble of Canton will scale to new heights. You will throw javelins with the Mansipoor light infantry and ride with the Nomad horse archers. You will heft long-axes with the Norsikaan heavy infantry and string bows with the Tempest Islander archers. You will observe the war plans of the various officers, exotic and familiar, your understanding of their tactics growing along with your confidence in the Battle Cant. You will carry out those manoeuvres and formations practice, from small skirmishes to entire mock pitch battles involving the greater majority of the Guard on some occasions.
>GAIN ‘The Art of War’. During a pitched battle, any re-rolls your side benefits from can still be used against double-fails. Upon winning personal combat you will occassionally have an additional option to boost the ordinary Battle DC effect, but this will provide diminishing returns as the scale of the battle increases.
You will soak it all in, every drop, as water to a sponge. For well you know that there will come a day when such knowledge in the ways of war could prove to be the keystone to Ardenne’s eventual reclamation. The Angel has guided you here, perhaps for this very purpose. For the Almighty is the Almighty, but it is through the faith and skill of his creations that his will is imposed in the Kingdom of Heaven.
