So I got into a conversation with someone else about how martial arts is portrayed in Dragon Ball and it got me thinking.
Who would win in a fight assuming no transformations and both were locked at the same power level? Karn or Xeno Goku?
Someone brought up the fact that despite their general great love of fighting, Goku's basically the only full-blooded Saiyan that could be called a proper martial artist in canon. The vast majority of them don't approach fighting with a technical mindset the way humans do. That's not to say they don't have techniques but if something works well enough in a fight and doesn't have blatantly obvious flaws, then Saiyans will stick to that method even if there might be a better or more efficient way of doing so. They don't experiment or study their power. Their focus is always on winning and/or killing their opponent through pure strength.
Future Chaya had to tell us that taking two days off of training a week was more effective than going at it 24/7. We've picked things up from various teachers as we go along, but we're less likely on average to experiment with new techniques instead of mastering a transformation or raising our power level. Karn definitely has a wide array of skills to draw from, but we ultimately approach fighting the same way Vegeta does in canon, only minus the arrogance that gets his shit pushed in constantly.
Goku has a rock solid foundation of skills that he's been building on for his entire life with every new teacher he gets and every challenge he faces. Whereas we have a wide variety of skills but less grounding in most of them which we make up for with power, ferocity and killer instinct. Both are valid and clearly effective ways of fighting.
