“I shall take you up on that offer oh Gateskeeper.” Declared Lucian as he slammed his fist into his chest, “But I will only do so if my terms are met. First and foremost I need arms and armor, for my scarred skin is exposed and my hands lack a scythe to cut down the monsters of Chaos.”
“Both of those I can arrange.” Declared the man with far more purpose and certainty than a Gateskeeper could have, “But what is the other terms you have?”
“It is my last one.” Lucian declared as he stepped forward, “You are to give me a new place to sleep everynight whose roof was different from the one before. I am under oath to the Lady of the Lake that I am to do this. If we are sieged, then I expect that to be my maintenance.”
“Another place every night?” The man sounded as if he was laughing at the idea as he spoke aloud, “And what happens when I run out of roofs for you to sleep under? From my count there are only five roofs for you, if you don’t mind sleeping with the horses or smiths.”
“Then perhaps by then my debt will be paid and Chaos decided to try ending this fortress. I have seen the scattered dead who go unmourned and the effigies that hold them towards the sky,” Lucian pointed out as he pointed towards the villages behind him then to the sky, “Morrslieb is waxing, it will be soon.”
The man looked up to the direction that Lucian pointed. High in the sky was the moon, its grin unseen by those who bore witness to it. Yet he was correct that the moon was growing, inching towards the fullness that declared the damnation of civilizations.
“Raise the gates!” Declared the Gatekeeper, “This Knight shall be in my service.”
Lucian felt a small grin upon his face as he walked forward to those words. It would seem he was not talking to a mere soldier, but the Baron of this Castle.
