“Well, I hope you’re making good use of him, because he is going to stab you in the back the moment he gets everything he wants out of you. The ‘steal all your research, your identity, and burn every bridge you’ve ever made in your life’ kind of betrayal.” you declared.
“Dmitri’s cowardly nature is not unknown to me.” Kraven said. “I would be surprised if he didn’t run.”
“Then why-?”
“Because he has skills that we currently need.” Miles answered for him. “The Chameleon only proposed this deal with Kraven and I because he was aware of his status as a marked man. This way, he can use the Kravinoffs to protect himself from you, or any other enemies that he might have.”
“So neither of you want to work with him.” you concluded.
Kraven closed his eyes and lowered his head slightly. “We are watching him carefully. I am almost certain that he intends to blackmail us and flee with the professor’s research. It is our job to cut off his route of escape when he finally decides to show his true colors.”
You glanced between both of them with an incredulous look on your face. “And both of you are totally okay with waiting for that to happen?”
“I would rather have him where I can keep track of his movements. It is preferable to the alternative.” Kraven admitted.
“I know a few people who are really good at breaking into places and gathering data. Let us do his job so that we can kick him to the curb.” you proposed.
Kraven stroked his beard in a thoughtful expression, and Miles was looking at you with mild interest.
“I will LITERALLY pay you to let me beat him up.” you pleaded.
Both men couldn’t help but crack a smile at that.
“You can keep your money. What we want are results.” Miles said in a low, serious tone. “In a few days, the Chameleon is supposed to steal some valuable intel from Roxxon Corp regarding genetic mutations. If you can obtain it before him and return it to me, then we can talk about cutting him out of the equation.”
You nodded slowly. “Just give me the info and I’ll make it happen.”
“Be careful not to kill him right away in your eagerness.” Kraven advised. “Dmitri will most likely have fail-safes in place for his inevitable death. Make sure that he cannot hurt you or us after his passing or capture.”
He would be the type to have those, wouldn’t he? Come to think of it, you should probably make sure that he isn’t having your friends and family watched. He has known your secret identity for some time now. Couldn’t hurt to check.
“I’ll be careful.” you promised. “The guy won’t know what hit him.”
