He probably suspects it was important, valuable, powerful, given that their a huge chunks of goblin silver just sitting right there. Goblin silver doesn't come cheap, even at the best of times. Hell Godric Gryffindor's sword was made of it and could work to shatter extremely strong pieces of magic artifacts like Horcruxes. This is along with the sword being infused with basilisk venom, which can fuck up most things.
