"The monsters are all dead~" Astra sings happily as she dismounts from Romulus. She scurries over to assemble all the loot from the enemy holdings into a pile. Had she a tail like Romulus, it would have doubtless been wagging cheerfully at the site of the Gobloch's hoard. Indeed, your mind's eye can see it now, less an elf and more a Great Florese upon her hind legs, as she sings off tune. "Now it's time to take their treasure~ Treasure~ Treasuuuuuuure~"
[The enemy has been eliminated,] Romulus agrees with Astra, his snout bowed. [Their shinies belong to us now, Miss Astra. Lady Roxanne, have we passed your evaluation?]
You step out from behind the corner and give the wolf a smile and a nod. "You both performed well enough. Roomulus, your fangs and claws were truly formidable, and paired with the Black Lightning I have no concerns with your ability to keep up. As for your magics, Astra..."
Astra pops out from one of the Gobloch huts with a sack full of shiny seashells - the currency of those creatures - and looks at you with a cloudy smile. "It gets the job done, doesn't it?"
You cannot suppress the sigh that escapes your mouth. "Magic Green is a font of creativity meant to bewilder the mind and disable your foes from oblique angles. The baleful polymorph is a fine spell, but to use it in rapid succession..."
Astra's smile does not change, and in the same tone as before, she says, "It gets the job done, doesn't it?"
You would like to think your look is unreadable, but the disappointment must be clear on your face. "Predictability is death upon the battlefield. If a foe expects you to cast a baleful polymorph upon them, then it could be countered. Magic Green has such a lovely array of spells, from the Soliloquoys of Grandmother Spider to the Excellent Prismatic Spray. Surely you could-"
"I am but a novice mage with scant more than a century of spellcasting experience behind me," Astra tells you with that same, head-in-the-clouds smile on her face. "My baleful polymorph still requires a full circle's worth of mana to actualize. Teacher said that I would be ready for more complicated spells once it took a single breath of mana like any cantrip should."
You blink. Magic Green was not your field of specialization, but you know for certain that Baleful Polymorph requires five circles of mana, not one.
No wonder she could throw it around like she did. Elven refinement is truly formidable.
"Ooh! A treasure chest~!" Her mind quickly turns to the nearest shiny objects. "You can leave its lock to me~ I'll set the lovely treasure free~!"
