The elder and his family visit the tribe that is responsible for stealing away his daughter. They take half a dozen boars with them, which they offer in exchange for the taken woman. The neighbours accept the offering and the young men responsible for taking her are admonished. The offered beasts are cooked and consumed in a feast to celebrate this dialogue between tribes and soon, the elder returns with his daughter – and the child that she bears.
This becomes something of a tradition. Whenever there is friction with a neighbouring tribe, our clan sends an offering of beasts so that any transgressions might be forgiven and forgotten. This leaves our tribe on good terms with its neighbours, especially the ones that they call the women stealers – the Bravigrovic. Unfortunately, this habit of offering livestock to other clans sometimes leaves our tribe – often called the beast bringers, the Protavic – with precious little for its own people.
A generation passes.
With each passing generation, the Protavic live for longer. Until now, few tribesmen have lived long enough to be called 'elder' and each family has had its own way of treating the elderly. However, the growing number of old folk means that some sort of standardised treatment might be necessary. On one hand, the accumulated wisdom of the elders can be of great use to future generations. On the other hand, their feeble bodies mean that they can no longer contribute to the well-being of the tribe.
The tribe could revere seniority. It is seen as an honour to reach a ripe old age and it is the duty of the young to care for their elders. Anyone who dares to disrespect or neglect their seniors is punished severely.
The tribe could encourage kindness. The young are not beholden to the old, but anyone who is kind enough to look after their elders will be praised. The act of supporting those who are less able will be seen as virtuous.
The tribe could respect self-reliance. It is shameful for anyone to expect charity from others. If a man reaches the age where he can no longer look after himself, he should die with dignity rather than live like a parasite.
The tribe could eliminate weakness. To grow old is to grow weak. Only the young and the strong are respected. Anyone who is unable to contribute to the tribe is culled, which leaves more food for the able-bodied.
The tribe could leave it to the families. There is no need for there to be a universal standard among the Protavic. People should be free to treat their elderly relatives however they want.
How will the Protavic treat their elders?
>Revere seniority.
>Encourage kindness.
>Respect self-reliance.
>Eliminate weakness.
>Leave it to the families.
