Despite being outnumbered, the Glachovic fight with inhuman ferocity. For every one of theirs that falls, they bring down at least two of the Protavic and Vuvovic. Fearing death at the hands of the enemy, many of the allied warriors choose to run rather than lose their lives to the spears and arrows of the huntsmen. Even the bravest fighters are forced to follow suit as they lose the numerical advantage, leaving their dead and wounded behind and allowing the Glachovic to recuperate.
Fearing that the failed assault might have emboldened the hunters, the allied warriors soon regroup and steel themselves for a counterattack at the edge of the Glachovic settlement – yet it never comes, not even after several hours of waiting. Eventually they gather the courage to venture forth and meet the hunters in battle once more, only to find that they have fled across the river on the rafts that they were assembling. Any wounded beast-bringers and blood-drinkers who were left behind during the retreat have been executed.
Almost forty of the Protavic lie dead and over twenty of the Vuvovic have been slain. As for the Glachovic, fifteen of their dead litter the battlefield – they must have fled with their wounded. However, no matter how much this defeat might sting, this war was a successful one. The territory and non-combatants of the singers and the hunters have been captured and the blood-drinkers have reclaimed their home. Not only that, but Drovul Bal and the other Vuvovic have been suitably impressed – they are willing to join the Protavic as an honoured caste of warriors.
There are several decisions that must be made. First of all, the Protavic must decide what should be done with the Bruslavic and Glochavic captives.
They could be assimilated. So far, this has been the preferred way of the Protavic people. After several generations, the population of the integrated tribe will identify solely as beast-bringers.
They could be accepted. The integrated tribe will be allowed to retain its customs and its beliefs, for good or ill. Over time, these practices may influence the rest of the Protavic people.
They could be enslaved. The captured tribe will be kept as slaves, used to perform all of the backbreaking work that the beast-bringers find distasteful, though they may come to resent their masters.
They could be cast out. The tribe will be forced to vacate their territory and flee into the forest. While our tribe will have less able bodies, it will also have less mouths to feed and more land for pastures.
