Flying over to the floating jumpship had been fairly easy, but you were careful to avoid the spot where Gwen had thrown up. Looking at her now, the color had more or less returned to her face, and her eyes were back to normal again.
She gave you a weak glare as you landed behind her.
“I hate you so much right now.”
“You know, you could’ve just refused.”
“Yeah, but…”
“I know. You wanted to help. And that’s why you’re the one that I asked.”
Gwen opened her mouth, closed it again, and then let her head fall back against the headrest with a sigh.
“I seriously hate you.”
You laughed at her, but you quickly composed yourself and dipped your head in apology, before crawling over so that she could see you better. Her eyes followed you. They were a bit red, but there wasn’t a hint of yellow in them now.
“Sorry, but I’m gonna need another favor from you.”
She gave you a suspicious look, but she let you continue.
“I need your help to defeat Doctor Doom, because your shield is just about the only thing I know of that can cancel out his magic.”
Gwen’s eyes went wide, and she blinked several times, almost as if she suspected that this was a dream or a hallucination. Her jaw worked wordlessly as she struggled to come up with a response.
“Can’t I just…let you borrow it?”
“No, I can’t just take it away from you like that.”
“No really, it’s no trouble. This thing makes it hard to lean back when I sit down. Like, right now, it's kind of digging into my back.”
She grunted as she squirmed in her seat to reposition herself.
“Here, let me get it for you.”
She reached over her shoulder to grab her shield, but before she could, you reached out to grab her arm.
“You’re right. I do need the shield. But I need you to be the one holding it. Hill trusted you to hold onto it, and so do I.”
Her muscular arm tensed in your grip, and you got the impression that she wouldn’t have any trouble breaking out of your grasp if she really wanted to.
“But why me? We both know that I’m not the only one who can throw this thing.”
She gave you a pointed look. You nodded.
“I can throw it, but I need you just as much as I need that shield. You’re smart as a whip, resourceful, and a hell of a lot more heroic than I am. And I need someone like that fighting by my side, because I know for sure that you won’t run when the going gets tough.”
She let out a frustrated breath and flopped back into her seat.
“I’ve only ever fought C-Listers and common thugs. I can’t fight Doctor Doom! He’d squash me.”
“Yeah, and you’ve never flown an alien fighter jet before either, and look at what you did just a few minutes ago.”
You argued. Gwen sputtered in protest.
“This and that are two entirely different things! I just…!”
You cut her off before she could continue.
