"Everyone's still pretty shaken up," the teacher says, taking a sip of his coffee. "Bill has been with this school for so long, he's like a part of the family. I just hope he's going to be okay."
You nod sympathetically, "I hope so too."
The conversation continues for a while, more teachers coming in and out. It's the break time perid so the room is starting to get packed. the teacher, Ted, starts sharing more stories about Bill and his time at the school. You try listen and respond attentively, feeling a sense of camaraderie with the teacher and the rest of the staff. There's times where you feel like out of place, almost as if everyone looked at you like a disgusting thing but, you appreciate the few moments when you can forget about it.
Finally, the principal walks in . She gives you look, you know that look of disgust very well. She quickly dismisses you without even saying a word and begins to address the room with with news about Bill's condition. He's stable and is going to be okay. Everyone in the room lets out a sigh of relief.
You finish up with the food and just when you are about to leave. You can feel the principal's presence, you turn around and there she is.
"And here I was thinking we were going to have to do with just one janitor today. Finally decided to show up for work?"
Ah yes, it begins the usual social beating.
You force a smile, "Yes, ma'am. I was just taking care of an emergency situation."
The principal huffs, "Well, make sure you catch up on your work now. We can't afford to fall behind."
You nod, trying to hide your frustration, "Yes, ma'am."
You quickly gather your things and leave the room, feeling a mix of emotions. On one hand, you're grateful for the opportunity to help and for the news that Bill is going to be okay. On the other hand, the principal's harsh words sting. Nevertheless, you try to focus on the positive and head back to work, knowing that there is still much to do.
Looking out the window you realize, that its quite misty today. There's a light fog that you didn't saw this morning. You pay it no mind as you start cleaning one of the classroom.
Where should you clean next? Or maybe you could kill some time, till you are done for the day. Regardless, without Bill around you are going to have to close everything down before leaving. And maybe stay in longer.
