>>6311436Questions... you are too raw for questions, and you guess Don Bosco, too. So if you have to say one, you know what it is.
"Y'know, there's one thing we can really do at this point. Where's the bar?"
You wipe your tears, sniffling, as Don Bosco ceases his. By the look in his eyes, he understood how you feel. Wordlessly, he waves towards the bar, and leads the way there. As you and Valencio followed him, you pat the priest's shoulder.
"Hey, Valencio? Would you be so kind to keep sober and be our drink guardian?"
Basically a wingman keeping an eye for trouble, or over-inebriation.
"Of course. I'll bail you out when you've had enough."
"Thanks, I owe you one."
The bar looms in front of you already, and Don Bosco already sat down on one of the stools. He gestures for you and Valencio to sit at the two vacant ones in front of the bartender.
"So, what are you ordering?"
Valencio asks, the model of courtesy. With salty cheeks, you scan the wall of bottles on the bar - but your brain's giving a blank.
"What's your strongest drink, bartender?"
"Try the Vermouth. Viridis-made, means they cut in some seawater in the process."
"Then a shot of that, please."
With practiced professionalism, the bartender produces a glass from under the counter and proceeds to fill it with Don Bosco's recommendation. He himself pours the contents of a flask that smells like bourbon into another shot glass. Then he raises it towards you.
"I appreciate you not asking questions, Rosa. Sierra was dear to me, and in a different way she was dear to you. But that does not mean our sorrows are equal. So... to bittersweet memories."
You gently hold your glass. Bittersweet memories indeed.
"To drowning our sorrows."
"Cheers."
Glasses clink and liquor goes down your throat, the subtly verdant aroma of the vermouth hits you like a wave. Then one glass becomes two, two becomes four, and the world spins in a vivid, fuzzy way...
