>>6106691Consider that the construct in your mind is relatively incorrect, while also being relatively correct.
Changelings have consistently tried to do
>Manifest: Increase my stat by rolling my statAnd from the top level, this will always remain imposible. The universe itself rebels against the arrogance and hubris, and the next time a changeling does it, their entire body-structure will be replaced by shrimp.
There is a fundamentaly profanity in the notion that a system exists that tests against a value, then you increase the value, then you test against the value again. To even suppose this is possible at all is to reveal the depths of heresy that has ensared your soul. To consider it is abominable. To maintain it - for multiple turns and multiple floors and multiple adventures - remains grounds for a crusade. Luckily, by now, after repeat mention of the abject impossibility of such complete nonsense and the endless, endless refrains that "you cannot +1 yourself to infinity", it may finally be beginning to stick that any universe that allowed something so inherently wretched would have ground itself to horror years ago.
Consider, fundamentally, that if you could add +1 to get +1 to then test against a higher number, your enemies would have done so before you and would now be unassailable godkings on a throne you could never hope to reach.
So, that all said, what does that leave us with, Changeling?
Consider perhaps in terms of gradual increments and refinement.
Reference Values are sacroscant. But Features are sub-categories that alter reference values.
You test against Physicality and embed +1 TK Strength to your Physicality.
If it was 10 for most physical tasks, it's now 11 for feats of Strength. When you wonder how much oomphf your telekinesis has, it's now +1 higher. If you test your damage, well, that +1 is a +1, and it does matter. You go from mentally slugging someone for 1d6 to 1d6+1. This is a small thing, but it has enormous impact.
Suppose you want to wrestle a standard door off of its hinges. A grapple is usually a contested roll, your effective strength against theirs, modified, so a normal office door has 10 Int and just uses that value. They're flimsy and with poor locks. You have 10 Physicality but 11 for Strength purposes, and we test 11 vs 10.
That's still not so impressive, but it is clearly better than what it was before you refined your Strength.
So the insight here is that Features adjust your limitations enormously, that one can develop them as a changeling very fluidly, and that they stack on top of reference values that one uses to develop the feature. This implies a few things, such as that every +1 to your Mutability or Psychogenesis or such is a radical increase in power. Not only are you now stronger, your future changes are easier to make.
So far, so good, you're wondering what the fuss is
