>>5945628Anyway, I have been nonstop watching John Carpenter films, it started with that anon mentioning going to Antarctica on the last qtg so I watched The Thing (hehe I liked how in Halloween, which was made in the 70s, John Carpenter included a little preview of The Thing a film he would go on to make later yay). I watched Assault On Precinct 13 (70s original), then Escape From New York Escape From LA and Halloween etc. I am beginning to think John Carpenter is the greatest visionary director ever in America, Escape From New York sort of predicts 9/11 (World Trade Centre imagery), he predicted aapl Watch and biometrics back in 1981, Escape From LA has a scene where a fatal virus is used for control / compliance, but actually turns into a harmless flu by the end...
Also, I don't know if anyone has ever mentioned it, but it seems to me that ALL OF CYBERPUNK which comes from William Gibson Neuromancer, was basically derived from John Carpenter Escape From New York (eg the Neuromancer hacker neurotoxin that poisons Case - it sounds a lot like the micro-explosives injected into Kurt Russell carotid arteries... also I remember one of the minor subplots of Neuromancer involved some mercenaries flying behind Soviet lines in stealth microlight gliders... this is basically the opening infiltration of Escape From New York) The tone of Cold War era nihilism that pervades John Carpenter's horror / apocalyptic work also feels more relevant than ever (Escape From LA is set in a backdrop of war against a Soviet Union / China alliance) What I like about his films is they can be understood on many levels, they seem very political and predictive of the future. Perhaps John Carpenter himself did not anticipate all of the resonant imagery that his filmmaking evoked but he simply drew upon decades of 1950s 1960s sci fi that reached into the imaginative mass psyche of fears panics and anxieties that recur through the ages etc
Anyway pic related some keyframes from Escape From LA. The sequel is not as iconic as the first one, there are still some cool moments (and I stupidly did not even see the subverted twist twist ending coming lol) but I just thought these scenes looked really cool, trying to find imagery like this for an extraction looter type urban SERE / loot raid setting
