That night, you go to bed still with the excitement of the day on your mind. When you fall to sleep, you have a dream.
Your dream is very vivid. You are naked, wearing jewels and the amulet of the Supreme Ruler, and as you walk through the field the men and women alike of the Hegemony bow to you. They worship you, and call you their queen. You move your hands and conduct the wind. The dreams ends as you gently wake up, feeling the warmth of satisfaction as the men of the Hegemony look to you as their goddess.
Oh no... what the hell was that?! Why did you have a dream like that? Is it some kind of deep seated desire for power- or a premonition? What's wrong with you, girl?!
There has never been a female Supreme Ruler, and there never will be. Men are stronger and smarter then women, this is well understood. The Supreme Ruler is a warrior, magician, lover, and king. The Supreme Ruler commands and the world obeys. He doesn't merely defeat the enemy, he tortures and destroys them to set an example for all who come later. Even the timing is messed up- Cijan is too young to be seeking a replacement now; and you'll be too old when he is ready to find the next Supreme Ruler- Cijan's own children, when he has them, would have a better chance then you.
But- is there really a reason there hasn't been a female Supreme? You know this already, and yet despite that the first inklings of ambition creep into your adolescent mind. Every challenge your tutors have laid out for you, you've beaten. You aren't proud, but you have the competitive edge and routinely defeat males of your age in test scores and other pursuits- even your gymnastic records show a great physicality- though you have no training in the noble art of dueling, you feel as though you'd be a natural study.
But... is this even something you <span class="mu-i">want</span>?
