“Are there any ‘Dos and Don’ts’ for interacting with the Fae?” you asked. “I’d like to avoid being smote for my ignorance, if at all possible.”
Strange frowned, and he gave you a reproachful look that told you exactly what he thought about a complete amateur meddling in the affairs of the Fae. “If you don’t know already, I shall go over the basics.” he declared. “First off, don’t give them your name. Names can hold power, and creatures like the Fae can use that power to take control over your actions. I advise you to use a nickname or a made-up name when conversing with them.”
“And the reverse is true, too.” Cat put in. “If you find out and use a fairy’s real name, then they’ll leave you alone.”
Strange blinked, and then nodded approvingly at her.
“That is correct, miss. I can see you’ve read up on such fairy tales.” Strange said, seemingly not intending to make a pun.
Cat just shrugged and gave him her usual easygoing smile. “I used to read books about them as a kid. I’m surprised to hear that they got a lot of things right.”
“Ah, but there is usually a genuine nugget of truth to be found in all things. Even in bold-faced lies.” Strange said with a raised finger. “But that is neither here, nor there. The second rule of interacting with the Fae is a fairly basic one. Do not behave rudely towards them. You must pay close attention to your words, and mind your attitude around them.”
Cat nodded. “Right. Don’t be lazy, or selfish, or inhospitable.” she said, listing things off on clawed fingers.
“And you definitely shouldn’t abuse them, verbally or physically. That would undoubtedly earn you a nasty punishment.” Strange added, shuddering once more at the mere thought of it.
“Don’t eat their food, either.” Cat said. “Because if you do, then you won’t be able to leave the fairy realm, or eat human food ever again.”
“That’s only if you’re already in the fairy realm to begin with.” Strange corrected her. “But yes. Do be careful of receiving food from them. And watch for any fairy circles.”
“What the hell’s a fairy circle?” you asked, genuinely confused and feeling a bit overwhelmed. Maybe you should be writing this stuff down.
“Sometimes, when a tree dies,” Strange began. “A ring of mushrooms will grow in its place. By no means should you enter one if you see it. You’re likely to get stuck there, dancing like a mad-man until you either pass out or die from exhaustion.”
Sheesh. You never knew that fairies were such dicks.
“Aren’t those supposed to act as portals to the fairy realm, too?” Cat brought up.
