<span class="mu-r">“I thought that was obvious. They want to create a mutant spider army!”</span> you exclaimed.
Richard didn’t seem entirely convinced. <span class="mu-b">“I’m not so sure. You said that the one that bit you was in Connor’s lab?”</span>
You nodded, before gasping out of shock. <span class="mu-r">“You don’t think that-”</span>
<span class="mu-b">“That the first one was meant for Connors, and you just so happened to be in the way? I do.”</span> Rich confirmed. <span class="mu-b">“I think someone targeted him specifically.”</span>
<span class="mu-r">“Do you think they were trying to get rid of him?”</span> you guessed.
Rich shook his head. <span class="mu-b">“Whoever’s doing this clearly knows about our research. They would know that a single spider bite wouldn’t be enough for a guaranteed kill. No…whoever’s doing this must be trying to discredit the researchers that were involved in the project. Maybe they’re trying to send a message, or enact some sort of sick revenge.”</span>
<span class="mu-r">“Do we know anyone that might be motivated enough to go through with that?”</span> you asked.
Your brother rubbed at his chin thoughtfully. <span class="mu-b">“I’d have to do some digging…”</span>
<span class="mu-r">“You mean <span class="mu-i">we’ll</span> have to do some digging.”</span> you corrected him, clapping your brother on the shoulder. <span class="mu-r">“Right after we figure out what we’re gonna do about the Russian Mob. Because I seriously doubt that we can just ignore those guys.”</span>
Richard gave you a sheepish grin. <span class="mu-b">“I heard those Punisher girls took care of them. I don’t think they’ll be coming for me anytime soon.”</span>
<span class="mu-r">“Rich…”</span>
<span class="mu-b">“I’ll be fine, Ben. They caught me off-guard before. Won’t happen again.”</span> he promised.
You opened your mouth to protest, but Vic and the others reentered the room a moment later. Cindy looked annoyed, and your sister seemed content with the outcome of their little check-up.
You exchanged a knowing look with your brother, and the two of you dropped the topic for the time being. You wouldn’t be able to have a truly private conversation until he was discharged from this hospital. For now, you’d just have to try and digest what your brother just told you.
