For several precious seconds, time seemed to slow down. In an instant, you took in everything about the scene unfolding before you. Every single one of your teammates, aside from Terminal, was facing an enemy that specialized in grappling and non-lethal takedowns. Your AR goggles identified them one by one.

Slither. King Cobra. Anaconda. These agents were sent here to capture you.

Maybe you tripped one of the SIlvertongue’s wards, or the Serpent Society was just extra jumpy from the Deep One’s interference. Either way, they were here, and they were ready for you. You’d have to look into that later, but right now, you have a prisoner of your own to detain.

Reaching into one of your belt pouches, you pulled out a bright red, bumpy marble and loaded it into your Hidden Gun. The barrel widened and tightened around the newly detected ammo type, readjusting itself to fit the Pym Pebble perfectly. Waiting until both Matt and Anaconda were out of the way, you raised your wrist, aimed and fired!

A red streak traced a path between the barrel of your gun and the Silvertongue’s chest, ending in a brief, but brilliant flash of light that was roughly shaped like the silhouette of a young woman. Once the light faded, the smoking pebble rolled onto the ground, the Silvertongue nowhere to be seen.

For a moment, everyone stopped to stare at the thing, trying to figure out what had happened, what your intentions were, and whether you had been successful. To be completely honest, you didn’t really know if it worked. There weren’t any visible changes or markings that indicated a successful capture. You’d have to talk to Phin about that in the tech review. It’s super inconvenient from the user’s perspective.

Before anyone could react to the new situation, you snatched the pebble with a webline and stuffed it into a separate pouch in your utility belt.

“Catch!” Matt shouted.

And without looking, you grabbed the Silvertongue’s wand out of the air and tucked it into the back of your belt as if it were a loaded gun. Maybe you should consider it one.

The other snakes seemed to guess what you were doing, because Anaconda moved to intercept you with her grossly elongated limbs. They were as thick as tree trunks, but long as light poles in their current shape.

You deftly avoided her grasping claws by leaping above them and using a webline to pull yourself higher into the air. In the corner of your eye, you were just lucky enough to catch Matt punishing the muscular woman for her negligence during their fight.

You would have to trust them to take care of themselves while you delivered the package back to the mansion. Hopefully, your reinforcements would show up before theirs.

“Rintrah, I need a portal! Now!” you demanded over the comms. You could feel the Pym Pebble wriggling and shaking around in your pocket like a goddamn pokeball. Either the thing was malfunctioning, or the Silvertongue was fighting back hard.

She made a low hiss that you recognized as her scoffing. “I’m a big girl, Huntsman. I can make my own decisions. And going into those tunnels tonight was one of them.” she said. “Besides, you did tell me about the amphibious one! I just…didn’t expect him to get the drop on me like that. My mistake.”

“Thanks for everything.” you said gratefully. “Now, please, go get yourself patched up.”

“Feel free to send a gift basket down my way when you…get the chance. I tend to get hungry when I have to regenerate lost tissue and muscle fiber.”

You were going to reply with a snappy remark, but the call dropped before you could. Her time must’ve run out on the call. It was probably for the best. Any longer and you would’ve started to worry about the long term effects of her injuries.

She sounded fairly confident that she would more or less make a full recovery, so you weren’t as stressed out as you’d normally be. Although, that poison must be something else. The Deep One has a superhuman constitution and metabolism, and you’ve never seen her get sick from…well, anything really.

You’ll have to be careful of that in the future.

After you came back inside, all eyes fell on you, and the conversation slowed to a crawl. From the bits and pieces you’d gathered on the way in, they were discussing the plans for the ambush, and any potential fallback plans, should a confrontation with the Serpent Society become unavoidable.

Cindy’s expression quickly turned to one of panic, and Matt was quick to notice.

“Talking with Reese, and a strange man who calls himself the ‘Sun King’.” he said, stepping further inside the room.

Mr. Knight seemed to perk up at that. “He’s back already? Neither the House, nor Reese informed me of his arrival.” he said, sounding slightly upset.

“How do you two know each other, anyway?” you said, looking between Matt and Marc.

They exchanged a quick glance before returning their attention to you.

“I’ve worked with Matthew on more than one occasion. We run in the same circles, after all.” Marc answered.

“Marc has worked with some of my friends in the Heroes for Hire for a brief period of time. It’s not entirely uncommon for us to cross paths when I venture outside of my territory.” Matt added. “Although, he’s something of a pariah in our community. The ‘Bushman Incident’ put more than a few people on edge.”

Marc sighed. “Really, Matthew. That was ages ago. Don’t you think it’s about time that you and everyone else just let it go?”

Matt glared at him. “You carved a man’s face off and wore it home, Marc. That’s not exactly the kind of thing that you can just sweep under the rug.”

You and Cindy looked at Mr. Knight with new eyes. Cindy had a scandalously shocked expression on her face. This guy was even more hardcore than you initially thought!

“I was having a rough week.” he replied easily.

“That doesn’t excuse your behavior!” Matt growled. “I don’t care what your God says, but it’s not okay for you to take a life or torture a man without a second thought.”

Marc folded his hands and leaned back in his chair. “Your people have waged entire wars, purged whole civilizations and destroyed cultural heritages in the name of your God. So, I’m going to give you the same answer that I’ve always given you when you’ve asked me why I feel the need to resort to such base violence in order to mete out justice.” he declared.

“Don’t you dare say that it’s-” Matt tried to warn him, but it was too late.

“It’s part of my religion, Matt. And as such, you have no right to judge me.” Marc replied automatically.

Matt just threw his hands up and stalked off to a different corner of the room. But before he could get far, you snagged an additional chair with a webline and pulled it up beside you.

“Take a seat, Matt.” you offered. “Ignore the bird, though. He’s rude and crusty.”

Matt pointedly did not ignore the bird as he sat down next to you.

Mr. Knight chuckled then. “That’s funny. He says the same things about you.”

“He called me ‘crusty’?” you asked, frowning in disbelief.
