"A'ight, gnolls..." Murdock says, preparing to impart his lesson. "Before I teach you 'bout magic, I want you to tell me what ye *think* it is and how it’s used by your fellow tribals. Y'know, just in case I gotta clear up any misconceptions you might have."
Daitza and you stare at each other. You’re not sure how to begin, so with a nod you give her free pass to speak first. "Well…” She meets the priest’s gaze, “Our shaman says that magic is a Devil's power running through a gnoll's veins, and it's what some gifted Bloodseekers can use by instinct to increase their strength immensely once per day. We call it ‘going bloodthirsty’.”
"Yup” you add in. “And if you control magic with your mind like the shaman does, you can also cast fireballs, summon demons and do all sorts of crazy stuff... but that takes lots of years of training, and most of us want to spend them doing more exciting stuff like fighting and kicking ass, so a weak or calm kid must be chosen as the shaman’s successor to learn under his care for a decade.”
Daitza nods at you with a somewhat worried look. “Natasha’s magic has grown super powerful lately, hasn’t it? The old man seems to be really proud of having a pupil like her...”
“Have you seen the size of her fireballs, Datz? They're almost as big as a humie! Scary stuff... but it's also pretty cool, don't ya think?"
She quickly shakes her head. “That woman gives me the creeps, Hyeny. I forgot to tell you about this, but a few months ago, I remember an occasion where I noticed her staring in your direction… with her eyes WIDE OPEN. And you know she’s supposed to be blind...”
“Woah. Really? That’s kind of weird...”
“Right?! I have no idea what goes through her head, but it *cannot* be good. I never liked her that much, you know?”
“You sure it wasn’t because she picked up my scent or something? I mean, she's got a great sense of smell...”
“Nah, she’s totally hiding something. I just know it!”
“Ahem!” Murdock loudly clears his throat, grabbing your attention and Datz's. “I see your understanding of magic ain’t so bad, but there are still a few concepts I gotta’ clear up before teachin' you spells.” With those words, Murdock proceeds to give the two of you a short lesson on the fundamentals of what this odd thing called ‘magic’ is.
