Lightning spiderwebbed across the clouded sky, collapsing to a point, then a single jagged bolt dropped, searing its image into Mel’s eyelids in the instant before Babs threw her hands up in front of their faces. Every muscle in Mel’s body clenched as a fraction of the lightning’s power cut though her, then the bark of the treant exploded, throwing both of them backwards.
She rolled to a stop and blinked at the stubborn afterimage of the lightning bolt. Somewhere beyond it was a large red smear.
“Are we alive?” She asked.
“Yeah, I think so. Probably shouldn’t have done that so close to us, but when life hands you a giant storm to work with...”
“You seek cover? Flee the area? I can still see the lightning Babs. And the tornado. It’s dead right?”
“It’s dead.” Babs grinned in spite of wind and rain pouring down. “This place is finally safe, forever. Let’s get out of here before that tornado hits us with a tree.”
