In a place like this, where common sense is equally as valuable as a wad of toilet paper, you have to rely on your gut. Your gut, right now, is telling you that Liz is doing something stupid.
You're not sure what she's doing or why she's doing it. You should probably stop her. Not because you really care about her, no no. You're concerned about her actions being tied back to you somehow. She and that Rex fella knew you were listening into their conversation.
You want to make sure that whatever's going on with her? You're not going to get hit by the crossfire.
"Ashton, do you have any idea where Liz might be?"
"who?" "That one beanie-wearing researcher."
"oh!" Ashton snaps her fingers. "i think the last time i saw her was during my shift this morning, actually."
"i was doing my rounds around layer 1, right, and one of the places i had to check was some conference room that HR uses. they usually hold meetings in there about employee performance and stuff like that."
"she was, uhm. pacing around outside the room, waiting for someone or something. didn't really ask her what she was doing." She smiles sheepishly. "i probably should have, huh?"
"Probably. I have a gut feeling she's doing something stupid. We're going to check up on her."
"sounds fine to me!"
The Man offers to lead the way, he knows where the conference room is. He's unsure if he has a keycard but if he does, it should let you guys into the conference room.
He hopes that she's not doing something retarded. He has heard some nasty rumors about her so he wants you to be cautious. He doesn't want to lose one of the few people who can hear him.
"Alright, let's go."
The three of you head out in search of the nearest elevator. An odd thought crosses your mind. The Man is basically non-existent to everyone besides you and Colt, right? What would happen if he had to get into a fight? You're not sure why you're even thinking about it but...
You ask the Man what happens when he touches someone.
He explains that, from what he's gathered, he can interact with people just fine. He taps Ashton on the shoulder to prove his point.
She shivers after being touched by the Man. "hey, is it cold in here?"
People, however, don't realize that he's touching them. They always assign it to something else. He bitterly jokes about how he hasn't gotten a proper hug from someone in what feels like a decade at this point. At least he's glad that he has people he can hang out with now.
Before you can say anything, you find the elevator you're looking for. Dealing with Liz is a bit more of a pressing issue so you squeeze inside the elevator with your two coworkers.
Ashton presses the button labeled "L1". The panel makes an odd electronic noise before chirping out a high-pitched beep. You guess that's good? As the elevator goes up, you find your heart twisting inside your chest. Something's telling you this might not be the best idea.
