You glanced over at the leather-clad cat burglar laying down next to you. Various images were rapidly flashing on her goggles lenses, her eyes darting back and forth to keep up with them.
“Did you find him!?” you blurted out.
She looked at you in surprise, as if she’d just remembered that you were right next to her. “Huh? Oh, no not yet. I was just watching some workplace drama unfold. I’ll have to check on these guys more often.”
You sighed and let your head smack against the concrete.
“Alright, that’s enough. It’s my turn.” you declared.
But before she could protest, Abe’s voice came out over the radio. He sounded frantic.
“Alright so…good news! I found the Chameleon!” he proclaimed. “I found this sort of…emotional dead zone, and I followed it to some guy that was rifling through their archives.”
You sat up immediately.
“That’s awesome! Did he put up a fight?” you asked, barely able to contain your excitement.
An uncertain groan was Abel’s initial reaction. “Not much of one, no. But that’s not the problem.”
“Then what is the problem?” the Prowler prodded.
“Well…this guy is kind of…not human.” Abel said, unsure of how to deliver the news. “He’s a robot, I think.”
Cat shook her head. “Hold on. Back up. How exactly did you come to this conclusion?”
“I was shaking him around, and his head just sort of…came off!”
“Was he always a robot?” Prowler asked.
“Nope. I could sense his emotions before. He’s definitely human.” Abel confirmed. “This thing must be some sort of decoy. It even acted like him!”
“Give me access to your feed.” Prowler demanded. A moment later, you were all seeing through Abel’s eyes.
From the looks of it, he was hanging upside down, clutching the limp form of a life-like android by the shirt. He looked to be a thin, pasty man with bright red hair and square frames of a similar color. The only obvious sign of him not being human was the fact that his head was hanging by a collection of thick, black cables.
Prowler gasped. “Oh, shit…”
“What? What is it?” you said.
“Is that…an LMD?”
Cat’s expression was completely dumbfounded, her expectations having been apparently blown out of the water by Abe’s discovery.
“I think it is.” Prowler confirmed.
“What’s an LMD?” you and Abe asked at the exact same time, and in the exact same tone of voice.
“It stands for ‘Life-Model Decoy’. It can perfectly mimic the appearance and mannerisms of the person that they were programmed to imitate.” Prowler explained. “And from the looks of it, this guy actually works here. A pretty good disguise.”
“They cost a pretty penny, too.” Cat added. “There aren’t a whole lot of people that can afford a piece of tech like that.”
