“We’ll perform a thorough investigation of their relatives and the state of their household.” she proclaimed.
She put it rather delicately, but what she meant was: “I have to make sure that none of their guardians are abusive. And if those homes don’t meet our standards, we’ll be putting them into foster care.”
By now, some of the other kids were complaining loudly, making sure that they were heard over the shouts of their fellow Lost Boys.
Callisto, Glass and Felicia were making an effort to placate them, but the little tykes were rebellious and indignant in their stance.
You looked to Peter Pan for help, but he was still pouting in some corner of the landing strip. He glanced your way, quickly looked away when your eyes met, and crossed his arms over his chest.
You rolled your eyes and shot a webline at his back. With a tug, you yanked the kid towards you. This elicited a yelp from Pan, as he struggled to regain his balance.
After a second, he cut the line and used his flight power to right himself in mid-air. He shot a glare in your direction, and you stared back impassively. Pan opened his mouth to fire an immature insult at you, but then he stopped and took a moment to look around. Everyone’s attention was on him. The kids had all stopped arguing, and were now looking to him for guidance. After everything that had happened, their faith in him was unwavering.
His jaw set, and he took a deep breath before speaking.
“You have to go with them, lads.” he demanded. “With everything that’s happening, I won’t be able to spend as much time on the other side. But if you’re here, then I’ll be able to protect you.”
“How?” Gordy shot back. “This place is way bigger than the island!”
Pan just shook his head. Without a word, he slowly rose into the air, and turned his body so that his back was facing you. In an instant, his figure blurred, and the air exploded!
One moment he was there, and the next, he was speeding down the horizon as a mere speck, faster than any missile that you’ve ever seen. The kids’ mouths gaped, and they were murmuring amongst one another as their collective disbelief had reached record levels.
After a few more seconds, Peter Pan was back where he’d just been, bringing a powerful gust of wind back with him.
“I’m a lot faster than you guys think. I can be anywhere in the world in the blink of an eye.” he proudly declared. “That means, I can check up on you. Make sure that none of you are getting yourselves in trouble.”
“But how are we supposed to reach you?” Grover asked.
Pan smiled. “Just call me. You all know it.” he said.
Squirt grinned at him. She then cupped her hands, tilted her head back and let out a cry that was halfway between “irate rooster” and “strangled cat”.
