“I’m young, because…I was bitten by a radioactive…child?”
It came out as more of a question than a statement, and you couldn't help but shrug at the end there.
Mantis’ mouth formed an expressive “oh” as she nodded to herself. And Joy, unable to grasp that you were messing around, had a similarly shocked expression.
“Did it hurt?” Mantis asked.
Joy looked concerned as well.
“You mean when I fell from heaven?” you shot back.
“You fell from one realm to another and you're still in one piece?” Mantis said, not at all picking up on the joke. “Wait, does that mean you know Angela? How's she doing?”
“She doesn't know that one either, huh?” Abe said, shaking his head as if he were looking at something truly pitiful.
“I do know an ‘Angela’, but something tells me that we're thinking of two entirely different people.” you said, plowing straight through this conversational roadblock. “You must be Mantis. I'm the Huntsman. We briefly met during Doctor Doom’s attack. I was the guy riding past you in the cyber car.”
Mantis’ eyes literally brightened as realization dawned on her.
“Oh, yeah! That was you, wasn't it? You were wearing different clothes back then.” she said, her antennae twitching ever so slightly. “If it wasn't for your aura, this one might not have recognized you.”
Chef Ameyama seemed to be struggling to simultaneously juggle her cooking duties and keep up with this conversation, all at the same time.
“Oh, you know me. I try to keep a consistent aura as often as possible.” you replied in a casual tone. “Are you hungry? This lady here makes a mean torta. First one's on the house.”
Mantis gasped and looked between you and Anna, as if to confirm your claim. Anna gave her a nod and a friendly smile. Mantis smiled back and placed a hand over her heart.
“Thank you! You’re just as nice as you usually are. Oh, wait. That’s the other one.” she corrected. “But you’re still very nice!”
“It’s no problem. Have you met my evil twin?” you said, gesturing to Abe.
The snappy response from your clone never came. When you turned to look at him, you saw that his attention was firmly fixed on Mantis. He seemed to be concentrating on something. The strange green woman just smiled and twitched her antennae in his direction.
“Wow. Your auras are so similar. It’s uncanny.”
“That’s not exactly my preferred adjective, but…sorry, can I ask you a weird question?” Abe said.
“We don’t know. Can you?” Mantis replied, looking unbelievably smug as she giggled to herself.
“At least she knows that one.” you muttered.
“Abe taught me that one, too.” Joy whispered, looking a bit smug herself.
“Sorry, we couldn’t help it. You fall for that one in most iterations.”
