“Recover and remount. I will finish it.”
Your directions to Dagger are clear, and they pull away from the hellscape, back to their remaining member.
Even on its last legs, Infernus still tries to fight, gauntlets raised in a guarding position.
It is outclassed. Outgunned, now. And clearly outmatched by you. But even still, it will Waste Your Time.
Battering at it smashes piece after piece from the arms, twisting and flexing the alloys with repeated impact, until the abuse can no longer be taken.
The annoyance of occasional long-range fire isn’t enough to save them, merely delay the inevitable.
A strike severs one limb, then goes low, flickering and reappearing halfway through the leg. Tearing it out makes the whole machine fall to that side, then on the back when you follow up with a kick.
And Infernus slumps into the ground, unmoving.
You hesitate for an instant. It’s no longer a threat. Immobilized and helpless, power gone. One foot raises, then stamps down, mashing it further into the fiery mud.
Then again, crushing down on the cockpit.
Back, out of the circle of choking flames and burning chemicals. The three mobile squad members leap up, trying to intercept your swift-moving form.
One misses with your approach speed, and an open hand snaps out, grabbing Dagger 3 and depositing her on your shoulder.
“We locked the LT’s armor. Just grab him and Go!”
You do just that, scooping the small form off the ground, and immediately starting to run, headed towards B-23’s emergency beacon.
A flickering beam chases you, reddish light searing through the air. Cyclops, trying to make its presence known.
Now that you’re away from the blinding heat, it’s possible to pick up thermals again, reading the paired Air Raiders in pursuit of you. Smaller heat signatures are picked up, missiles closing the gap rapidly, following the signature of your thrust boosts.
You cut Burning Eagle out briefly, skidding over the tundra, and letting the seekers shoot past, not compensating for your loss in speed.
“Sunray, reinforcements that were mentioned would be greatly appreciated. Soon. There’s a lot more than just two mechs out here. We’ve got 5 now, and at least a few aces among them.”
Sophie gasps into the comms.
“Cobalt, help is on the way.”
Anger floods the link, and she cuts the connection.
“Rapid-response is a lie.” Her eyes snap wide. “Beta, the minefield!”
Yes, you know it is there. Another jump sends you soaring above, trying to avoid triggering any Ticks.
More missiles and lasers chase.
