> Black spirit stone from the Battlefield
“Do you think it’s worth it to have the golem grab that black stone and bring it back here?”
Babs shrugged. “The one the skeleton spirits rode in on? Sure, why not, might be worth something in Spellbreak, or I might find a good use for it.”
Mel pet the little stone construct on the head. “Ok little guy, can you go to the valley those birds are circling over-” She paused to point into the distance. “and bring back a big black rock out there? It’s sort of glassy looking.”
A low rumble emitted from the golem and it plodded off. Mel watched it go with some concern.
“I never know if it really understood me.”
Babs chuckled. “I had one bring back a hornet’s nest once by accident. Asked for some papers and before I noticed it had wandered off into the forest, looking for paper. I guess it decided a wasp nest was close enough.”
“Well, I hope its version of big black rock is the same as mine then.” Mel frowned and looked out at the sun, drifting ever closer to the horizon. Time was running out on the day. The darkness of evening might be a good time to get a closer look at her skeletal opposition. Of course there was the Storyteller’s warning, or possibly threat.
“Babs, I ran into the Storyteller again down at the bird tower.”
Babs scowled, but remained silent.
“I think he was warning you, or maybe just me. He said something was going to happen the morning after you finish the circle, something about an angry god, his brother.”
Babs nodded, expression neutral. “I see.” She turned toward the nearest of the five tombs. “Hopefully Sylve will stand with me. I’ll be ready regardless. If things get bad head to the old centipede warrens, there’s a hundred tunnels there to hide in.” She returned to her book, expression tight and focused.
Choices for the evening. She could try to push her meditation forward, more mana would let her cut loose more easily. The lightning spell could be a useful combat technique, her spears hadn’t done much to the skeletons, and if they had a way to counter Aers she’d be in trouble. And of course there were books and the tiny metal tools to puzzle out, which might have new ways to survive.
