No one pays much heed at all to the new cabin boy, but that is probably true of new hires everywhere and speaks well to his prospects of anonymity. You had assumed that the Captain would turn them over to those who hired him, or arrange some sort of safehouse until ransom or something of the sort could be arranged. Curious that he’s keeping him close, especially given the Captain has been open in his intentions to spend a good deal of the future on voyages to shores other than Langland.
>GAINED 135 Sequins [Wealth: 185 sequins]
>GAINED Steel Blade +0DC to Combat.
“My apologies sir, it is the best I could find at short notice.” Captain Verdicci grins apologetically, his good humour entirely returned now that the ship is underway. “For reasons that are many, there was no time for a look at the markets for finer work. I have thrown in a little bonus on account of last night’s heroics, and as fair compensation for the blade.”
“Hmm.” You grunt as you inspect the blade, a common sort of weapon more suited to a lowborn than a noble. You run your thumb against the edge. Well, it’s sharp at least. No Castle-forged work certainly, but it will serve. “It will do for now. I will have to see a bladesmith when we arrive at our destination."
“And with your newfound wealth, you should be able to afford the attentions of un maestro, si?” You remain tight-lipped, waiting for the Captain to come clean. “Ah my clever words can not distract you? You are still awaiting my explanation?”
“They cannot.” You nod firmly, he has pushed the degree of trust between you far enough as it is. You want answers. “And I am.”
“Ah, very well.” The Captain sighs, rubbing his neck. “I warn you, it is not a short story.”
“I don’t know if you’re aware…” You turn your gaze pointedly out to the open ocean as the ship clears the Capara Bay, leaving Langland behind. “…but we appear to have a lot of time on our hands coming up.”
“Well said, L’Orso Tempesta! Well said.” The hearty laugh of the Langlish Captain sounds genuine to your ears. And Verdicci was not lying, his tale is not a brief one…
