The night, soon after brightening into pools of sheer light and shadow, exploded into an discordant combat, the heavy booms of the naval guns mixing with smaller tank guns, the chatter of automatic cannons, the smaller ripping of machine gun fire, rifles, and grenades, all mixing into a crashing noise. Yule hoped that the initial victories were going to the battalion- there was quite a ways to go before the egress point came into view.
He looked down into the car, and saw Velecacia with her eyes closed, seemingly undisturbed.
“You sleeping? <span class="mu-i">Now?</span>” Yule couldn’t help asking.
Her eyes stayed closed, but the blonde girl spoke. “He ist in peril.”
Yule cocked his head. Obviously, this was besides the fact that they were in a battle, in a war. “Who?”
“The one called Sir Walter.”
“Oh. Lieutenant Splitterschwert.” Yule shrugged. “He’s fine. A slippery sort. I spoke to him a couple of times. You know he was a mercenary once?”
Velecacia smiled softly, her eyes still closed. “I saw into his living ghost. A free spirit. He remindst me of the Sky Pirates.” Her smile slipped away. “He didst find me and takest me into protection. The Queen of the Free Folk wouldst repay properly such character.”
“You won’t be doing much from here.”
