“I owe you more than you think, Doc.” you said quietly. “I’ll see what I can do.”
The smile that Curt gave you then could’ve lit up a room. Especially one as dark as this lab.
But before he could start profusely thanking you, you held up a hand to stop him. “But I’m gonna need a few things from you first.”
“Is it money? I can get you-”
“I don’t need your money.” you interrupted. “I need a list of the most likely suspects you can think of, as well as full access to your lab.”
He nodded quickly. “Done. Is that all?” he asked.
“I’m also gonna need some information.” you continued. “Like, a list of how many spiders you made, and how many are still alive. What’ll happen if someone gets bit? Does it create another one of you and me? What if I get bit again?”
Curt held up both hands to stop your rapid-fire string of questions. “Hold on, now. One question at a time.” he sighed. “First, we should go over the list of possible culprits.”
You nodded, crossed your arms and waited patiently for him to continue. You caught Cindy mimicking your gesture out of the corner of your eye.
“Spencer Smythe was always opposed to our project, but I couldn’t imagine him sneaking into my lab to alter anything directly. Plus, I think he would sooner see those spiders destroyed, rather than letting them out to alter the DNA of innocent people.”
You’ve never really heard of Smythe, but you’ll keep his name in mind.
“There’s Dr. Mendell Stromm. He’s more of a roboticist, but the program he wrote to study the process of the spider’s web building tendencies and capabilities saved us a lot of time.” Curt explained. “I don’t think he has much of a motive, but I know he and Norman Osborn have always butted heads when they were partnered together.”
Connors paused as he said that, becoming lost in thought all of sudden.
“What?”
“No, it’s probably nothing. I was just thinking about Norman.” he responded.
“What about Norman?”
Curt began to pace and mutter to himself, completely ignoring your previous question. He was only brought back to reality by Cindy violently banging on the glass, startling him in the process. Several seconds later, Jess came barging in to check on the situation.
“We’re fine!” he reassured her.
Jess looked at him, then you and Cindy, before slinking back and letting the door close behind her. You all waited several seconds before continuing again.
“I highly doubt that Norman would be capable of tampering with our research, considering the current position he’s in. He’s got one hell of a motive, but-” Curt said, before you interrupted him again.
“What do you mean?”
