We’ve one with us that’s been hurt, and she’s begun to deteriorate quickly..”
“Mmmm.” The merchant examines you with a quiet sigh. “Yes, I’m somewhat familiar with them. I suppose I could look her over for you.. for some pent.”
The berserker tends to the dhampir while the undead sulks in a corner. You set the doll out atop a coffin lid–you haven’t much had the chance to get a good look at her since she was first cut down, but she looks far worse for wear than you recall. Her face is so waxen–her body so still–you might assume her dead were it not for occasional shaky breaths.
The merchant examines her, peeling back her dress and prodding arms and wounds, almost as one would autopsy a corpse.
“So..” As she looks her over, you strike up conversation. “Do you know how this shrine is broken? What we lose if we die?”
“Ah, curious..? Well, if you must know, this shrine does not properly bind the mind in resurrection.” She looks close at the doll’s chest. “If you die, you’ll come back fully, physically, at the cost of memories.”
“At the cost of memories?” You echo. “To what extent?
“Well.. who knows? For some, it was what they had for breakfast. For others, it was their very names, identities.. or loved ones.” She shrugs. “Don’t die if you’re fond of your mind.”

You wake with a start, half–dozed off at the seat of a nearby casket–the merchant stands before you, hands folded.
“I’ve gotten a good look at her. Her organs are waterlogged and wounded, the preservatives diluted. She’s likely to die.” The merchant speaks with the bedside manner of a bull. “I haven’t the skill for the extent of her injuries.. But if you’d like to try to repair her now, you’ve got two options. You can attempt to replace her injured organs or switch her to a new shell. What do you suppose best?”
