I generally base the quest on what I have read or see in real life: I had finished a crusader Kings campaign in the region the home of the protagonists is based on, and then I threw in whatever I thought was cool. Ivanhoe, Lord of the Rings, A song of ice and fire, a bunch of generic fantasy settings and some TV shows from the 50s about knights

As to writing skills, I don't know. Personally, I found that I have improved somewhat, though I have never asked for feedback from my audience.
